A chemist is a scientist trained in the science of chemistry. Chemists may specialize in any number of subdisciplines of chemistry. In Commonwealth English, chemist may also refer to a dispensing chemist,a pharmacist, or a general retailer of chemicals (usually for medicinal purposes).

Jobs for chemists usually require at least a bachelors degree, but many positions require a PhD--especially those that require big poeple. Most undergraduate programs emphasis biology, mathematics, and physics. At the Master's level students tend to specialize in a particular field.

In recent years, computers have allowed chemists to practice what is known as combinatorial chemistry. This involves using software to simulate the properties of various compounds. Computers are able to test combinations rapidly which has lead to an increase in the number of useful compounds chemists have been able to discover.

The word chemist is a corruption of the New Latin noun chimista, an abbreviation of alchimista (alchemist).
