Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a 1994 wacky comedy movie, directed by Tom Shadyac. It starred Jim Carrey, Courteney Cox, Tone Loc, and Sean Young, among others. Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino also appears in the movie.

The story follows the adventures of Ace Ventura, a detective who specializes in cases involving pet animals, in his search for "Snowflake", the missing mascot of the Miami Dolphins.

The film was largely responsible for launching Carrey's film career, following the exposure he received as part of the cast of the TV show In Living Color.

The death metal band Cannibal Corpse, performing "Hammer Smashed Face" from their Tomb of the Mutilated album, appeared for a brief cameo at Carrey's request.

The movie had a successful sequel Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) starring Jim Carrey and directed by Steve Oedekerk. In this, Ace Ventura investigates the disappearance of a rare white bat in Africa.

There was an Ace Ventura cartoon on CBS, but it was an unqualified disaster. Carrey's film career took up too much time.

Trivia

A scene in the movie where a monkey is jumping around Ace's apartment became known as the Rally Monkey for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting in 2000.

The idea for the "Ray Finkle" character missing a game winning field goal in the Super Bowl was inspired by Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood who actually missed a game winning field goal in Super Bowl XXV. In the 1984 season the Miami Dolphins actually played in Super Bowl XIX with Dan Marino as their quarterback but they were defeated 38-16 by the San Francisco 49ers.

Character

The character of Ace was thought up by Carrey as a role that fit into his reputation on In Living Color.
