UEL: a 21st century University

The University of East London is an exciting, diverse learning community. We aim to give our students an enthusiasm for new ideas, new knowledge and new learning, and the opportunities to excel in their chosen careers.

On these web pages you can find out about our wide range of degree programmes, our learning resources, and life as a student both on campus and in the wider world. We hope you will also gain an insight into our distinctive outlook and philosophy. At the heart of an area of London that is undergoing rapid and exciting change, UEL is a focal point for innovation and renewal. We have developed a new vision of what a university can be not only adapting to the future, but helping to shape it. We hope you'll like what you see and that it will encourage you to apply to UEL.

Our vision

At UEL, we have a clear vision, which underpins all that we do. We aim:

To achieve recognition, both nationally and internationally, as a successful and inclusive regional university, proud of our diversity, committed to new modes of learning which focus on students and enhance their employability, and renowned for our contribution to social, cultural and economic development, especially through our research and scholarship.

We are making that vision into reality, through the diversity of our student and staff population, our commitment to widening access to university education, and excellence in teaching and research.

The UEL community

The diverse and cosmopolitan nature of East London is reflected by the vibrant multicultural community at UEL. We bring together people from around 120 countries and many different backgrounds. We are proud of the genuine sense of community at UEL, based on mutual respect and support between students and staff alike.

Teaching and learning

As part of our commitment both to increasing access to university and to helping students prepare for their future careers, UEL is constantly investing in new ways of teaching and learning. The modular structure of our degree programmes provides an unsurpassed level of flexibility in enabling you to choose what you study and when, while our Learning Resource Centres and Skillzone provide state-of-the-art learning support tools and career guidance.

Our students achievements

Our students achieve national and international recognition for their work; they include winners of the Turner Prize, Young Architect of the Year and Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards, RIBA medal winners, a film director, a magazine editor, a leading Bollywood actress, high- profile media lawyers and award-winning fashion designers. Studying at UEL could give you the confidence, skills and knowledge you will need to progress in your chosen career.

Investing in new campus developments

These are exciting times for UEL s campuses, as we evolve to provide an even more inspirational environment for students in the 21st century.

Major new campus developments are scheduled to be completed by 2006, which will bring all of our academic Schools together on two campuses, at Docklands and Stratford. While this means we will be leaving our Longbridge Road site in Barking, we will be setting up a new lifelong learning facility in Barking town centre, in partnership with Barking College and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Developments at our Docklands Campus

Our Docklands Campus, with its inspiring waterside location at the Royal Albert Dock, is our centre of excellence for the cultural and creative industries and a focal point for enterprise and links with business.

Opened in 1999 to critical acclaim for its iconic architecture, Docklands already offers students a modern and inspiring learning environment. The next phase of development is already underway. In September we completed a new purpose-built complex for our School of Architecture and the Visual Arts, designed by one of our own Architecture staff and already host to exhibitions and events.

The next developments scheduled for completion in 2006 will include:

Developments at our Stratford Campus

Our Stratford Campus, situated at the heart of this exciting and rapidly developing London district, has also undergone major changes recently. The historic former Central Library adjacent to our facilities has been transformed into an inspirational new networked learning resource centre, and we ve created new student s union facilities including an Internet Café in an architecturally stunning former museum.

The installation of a new 250-seat lecture theatre is scheduled to be completed during 2004, and during 2005 we expect to complete the building of the new London Foot Hospital, which will house facilities for our podiatric medicine students. A new computer centre and student residences are scheduled for completion in 2006.

A smooth transition

We are currently planning to relocate academic activities from our Longbridge Road site in Barking to our Docklands or Stratford Campus by the end of 2006, when the new and upgraded facilities have been completed. Until we move, the site and all its facilities will, of course, continue to operate as normal. The move itself will be carried out to ensure minimum disturbance to studies.
