Compilation celebrates the work of artists lecturing, teaching and working together in the AVA building at UEL Docklands campus. Each of us not only shows one work but makes a contribution to a CD in the form of music, voice, ambient or incidental sound.
Compilation is a common reference point for an emerging community – a demonstration that each artist’s practice is not simply a personal creative endeavour but achieves a wider resonance by association. This has many bifurcations and junctions, which mirror the day-to-day contingencies of our work and our practice of teaching.
Compilation is a show of work that is about what is both before and after our individual concerns as artists. It is to be seen as evidence of our cultural moment - a moving toward meanings gleaned from the space where vision and sound signify unexpected regions of comprehension between us. Radios ‘on’, then - and memories of sound waves long departed into the ether - but also a reminder of what for us is shared and distinct, different and together.
