drag queens take on press
October 13, 1994: The saga of the drag queens versus the press in the African nation Ivory Coast continues. Last week, we reported that publicity-shy members of the Association of Ivory Coast Transvestites beat up two journalists from the daily newspaper Soir Info September 10, in the capital city of Abidjan. The reporters had snuck into AICT's social gala and started snapping photos. Now comes word of an ACT-UP-style zap of another newspaper that infiltrated the gala and published an allegedly "salacious" story and photos. The newspaper itself reported, "About 10 young creatures, dressed in bright cloth, bejeweled, and with appropriate hair-dos, spilled out of three taxis on Monday" and zapped our offices." (Reuter)
