CatStevens.Com Review |
Izitso (Album) (is it so) was yet another departure for Stevens, this time with a different producer altogether in Dave Kershenbaum (Bio). There are a number of excellent tracks including Old Schoolyard and (I Never Wanted) To Be A Star (Song). But perhaps the best song on Izitso is Cat's brother David Gordon (Bio)'s, Child For A Day (Song), which ironically nearly didn't make the album. "Child" ended up being the last song Cat would ever perform in concert (as Cat Stevens (Bio)). |

All Music Guide Review |
(3 Stars - Good)
Cat Stevens (Bio) bounced back from the lackluster Numbers with an album of pop/rock songs that brought his usual rhythmic folk-rock into contemporary style with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, a snappy Dave Kershenbaum (Bio) production, and lots of synthesizers. Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens's ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion after one more album. In the meantime, Izitso (Album) produced a final Top 40 hit in "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard" and a singles-chart entry in the instrumental "Was Dog A Doughnut (Song)," as a result of which it returned Stevens's name to the Top Ten LPs list and gave him a ninth straight gold album, his last. -- William Ruhlmann |
