Masan Chrysantyemum
Masan is the largest chrysanthemum cultivating area that takes 15% in Korea and 50% of Gyeongnam. Masan chrysanthemum is the special product of the district and the quality is distinctive throughout the nation. This is due to the weather and soil quality of Masan that is suitable for the cultivation.

Flower plant business in Masan was started at Hoewon-dong in 1960, and 1,200 bundles were exported for the first time in 1971 to Hagwan, Japan. Then Masan Hoewon Complex was designated in 1972-1973, and this was extended to Usan, Songjeong, Hyeondong, Naeseo, etc. in 1978. In particular, chrysanthemum is the major kind of flower plant that is being cultivated in all seasons, and has become the special product of Masan with its excellent quality.

The major region for chrysanthemum cultivation in Masan are Jindong-myeon, Jinbuk-myeon, Hyeon-dong, Usan-dong, Yegok-dong and Hoeseong-dong with 215 farmhouses that coves 95.6ha of area, and the annual production reaches 60 million bundles. (Korea 672ha 15%, Gyeongnam 193ha 50%) As for the kind, there are Shinma, Subangryeok, Jeongwun, Chungwang for export and domestic delivery, and the government designated each region to cultivate 1 type of the flower. The facility has been modernized and the production capacity has been improved for the propulsion. The products show excellent quality, recognized very well in the Japanese market.


paprica

Hi-tech glass greenhouse of about 10,000 pyeong produces annual amount of 450 tons, exporting all of them to Japan to contribute to foreign money acquisition. The products cultivated are Fiesta, Spirit, etc, that has good color and homogenous quality, offered good price in Japan.


phalaenopsis orchid

Phalaenopsis requires less expense and effort for introduction and forming cultivation complex, but with high value. The cultivation was launched since September 2001 by Masan Agricultural Technology Center in Samjin (Jindong, Jinbuk, Jinjeon) region.

According to the New Round, high value added flower plant markets in the USA were excavated that resulted in the need for other kinds of plants for export. Also, high-tech high value added type fostering prepared for the foothold to Phalaenopsis cultivation for export.

Mr. Kim Gi-yong visited Belgium and Taiwan to bring in the plant, and proposed for the cultivation to foster high value added plant. Masan started the cultivation and formed complex with financial aid from the government, and self expense as well.


mushroom

The production of mushroom is done in urban agricultural region for stable annual supply. About 81 farmhouses covering 13,500 pyeong are cultivating for high and low temperature breed with Masan Jindong Mushroom research association in the center. Large agaric, agaric, and shiitake mushroom are being cultivated, and production of mushroom for medical use is being propelled.

Also, the shiitake mushroom in Micheon Bujaegol Village is cultivated naturally to enhance the quality.


Masan Kiwi

The kiwi breeds cultivated in Masan is Hayward, famous for its good quality and taste and nice appearance. They are consumed for juice, liquor, extract, etc.


Masan Tomato

The tomatoes in Masan region are tender and sweet that are preferred by the customers. The exported breed is ripening ones, such as Chobok.


Naeseo sweet persimmons

Naeseo sweet persimmons are sweet and show high quality with natural and geographical merits.

Three farmhouses started the cultivation to prosper the business in Naeseo region, and the advantages regarding the weather and geography secured profit for the residents. Hence more farmhouses participated, 37 in 1993 to make efforts for quality recognition. However, they failed due to lack of recognition and insufficient preparation. Three farmhouses (Lee Won, Lee Yong-tae, Jang Seong-ok) were recognized the quality after good comment of Naeseo sweet persimmon, and acquired quality certification.

Two more farmhouses acquired quality approval in 2000 (Lee Yong-hwa, Park Jinwuk) and now 5 farmhouses are certified of the quality of sweet persimmons. 40 farmhouses are taking part in the cultivation, covering about 51 ha of the land.


Rose

The chief producing district are Jindong-myeon and Jinjeon-myeon with area covering 2.4ha, and the number of farmhouses is 9. As for the breed, there are little marble, Macarena, Elodot, etc.

The feature is that they cultivate by nutriculture, and that the appearance and color is vivid, with the cut flower showing long preservation. Also, 70% of the production is being exported.
