CHART: Births, Infant Mortality, and Life Expectancy

Life expectancy in the United States was the highest ever in 2002, but infant mortality increased from a rate of 6.8 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2001 to a rate of 7.0 per 1,000 births in 2002, the first year since 1958 that the rate has not declined or remained unchanged.

CHART: Emergency Room Visits
|
In 2003, Americans made 113.9 million visits to hospital emergency rooms, a 26 percent increase over the 90.3 million visits made in 1993. During the same period of time hospital emergency departments have decreased about 12.3 percent.
