In brief

Half way home: The European Union wants to strengthen its ties with New Zealand. Currently holding the EU presidency, Austria is currently holding talks with representatives from Wellington. New Zealand’s capital city is 18,181 km from Vienna, which is half way round the globe.

Kaprun: Japanese relatives of victims of the 2001 disaster on a funicular train in Kaprun have joined others in a class action against the Republic of Austria filed with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The charge alleges that the transport regulations were antiquated.

Neighbour shot: In Vienna, a man shot dead his neighbour after a row over loud music. The shooter reported himself to the police claiming that he had acted in self-defence. According to him, his downstairs neighbour was attacking him with an iron rod and was known to be violent.
