New York Positions

Photo Editor, Out magazine, New York

Summary: Assigns, acquires, edits, and tracks photography and other imagery for Out, as well as the necessary documentation for Out, Out.com and associated Out projects. The Photo Editor also manages the Associate Photo Editor.

The Photo Editor is responsible for the assignment, gathering, cataloging, and archiving of images used in Out. The Photo Editor must make sure that all images meet the strict quality and usage standards set for this fashion/lifestyle publication, it’s web site and other associated projects.

The Photo Editor is responsible for all aspects of setting up the assignment, including determining the photographer, negotiating fees, and communicating all pertinent information, including deadlines. The Photo Editor may also need to act as liaison between the photographer, subject, editor, art director, agents, or any other persons involved in a shoot. The Photo Editor utilizes existing knowledge of contemporary photography, fashion and style to produce images that are consistent with the visual needs of the magazine, it’s web site and other projects.

The Photo Editor is proactive and accommodating in dealings with internal staff, publicists and freelancers. He or she is curious, observant and creative, with the instincts to uncover visual potential in the most routine of situations. The Photo Editor is expected to offer substantial input, which includes determining concepts and advising art directors on image selection. The Photo Editor must strive to continually upgrade the material that is submitted for use by offering suggestions to photographers and editors on how to improve their work in the future. The Photo Editor maintains a continually expanding stable of freelance photographers, constantly reviewing portfolios and published work.

Skill requirements: At least five years experience in photography and the visual arts; existing knowledge of working photographers and other visual talent. Familiarity with contemporary visuals and style. Also, knowledge of photo resources and processes; a high degree of organization, with the ability to oversee multiple concurrent projects on tight deadlines; the demonstrated ability to manage a creative professionals; and workable knowledge of Macintosh computers.

 

Marketing Associate, New York

The Marketing Associate supports the Senior Marketing Manger in creating, implementing, and maintaining the marketing strategy for both LPI Media and its publications with the goal of increasing advertising sales and enhancing market position.

Writing, Design, & Sales Materials

  • Maintain solution-specific sales materials including:
  • General presentations (PowerPoint, PDF, Flash) and Sell Pieces
  • Manage and execute copywriting for Advertorials and Sell Pieces
  • Maintain Advertorial book
  • Work with Sr. Marketing Manager to develop special sections to grow business
  • Maintain and manage image database

Market Research

  • Facilitate LPI’s research requests from sales
  • Work with Sr. Marketing Manager on the presentation of research findings for the sales team
  • Maintain LPI’s research library
  • Work with Sr. Marketing Manager to Develop research prototypes for The Advocate and Out

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience in a corporate/agency setting
  • Strong PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop and Flash skills preferred

Los Angeles Positions

Associate Photo Editor, The Advocate, Los Angeles

Summary: Under the direction of the Photo Editor, the Associate Photo Editor assists in assigning, acquiring, editing, and tracking photography and other imagery as well as other photo projects for The Advocate as assigned by the Photo Editor.

The Associate Photo Editor is responsible for the gathering, cataloging, and archiving of images used in the magazine as assigned by the Photo Editor or Editor in Chief. The Associate Photo Editor researches stock, subject-provided, and fine art photography, and should be very enthusiastic and creative about researching and have a dedicated desire to develop and expand on this skill set. Excellent photographic Internet research skills and ability to multi-task and meet shifting deadlines are a must. The Associate Photo Editor assists the Photo Editor in making sure that all images meet the strict quality and usage standards set for a newsmagazine.

The Associate Photo Editor is responsible for bringing in fully executed permission forms for all published artwork.

The Associate Photo Editor must work well in a fast-paced environment, have the flexibility to manage the pressures of a bi-weekly magazine with uniquely challenging subject matter, and be creative and efficient under tight deadlines and with tight budgets.

The Associate Photo Editor generates photo/illustration fee reports for each issue after they have been printed and assists the Photo Editor with clerical work when necessary. Daily inter-office duties include, but are not limited to, handling photo credits and photo permission issues and receiving, tracking & processing invoices as well as generating monthly photo/illustration fee reports.

The Associate Photo Editor works closely with the design team and Managing Editor to organize and facilitate shipping, production, and post-production issues.

The employee shall perform faithfully and dutifully those jobs customarily performed by this position and any other duties assigned by the Editor in Chief.

Skill Requirements: Knowledge of photo resources and processes. A high degree of organization with the ability to oversee multiple concurrent projects. The demonstrated ability to manage creative professionals (freelance photographers, lab techs, etc.). Outstanding communication and time management skills. Positive, can do attitude and a current, professional proficiency with Mac-based computers, Excel, Filemaker Pro and Photoshop / Adobe CS.

 

Western Advertising Director, Los Angeles

Job Summary:

  • Manages and grows the Western region territory, including supervision of the Western Account Associate.
  • Developing, maintaining, and managing accounts to which he/she is assigned. This includes locating and contacting decision makers at both the client and the agency.
  • Working with the Promotions and Marketing Department to handle all assigned accounts RFP's upon schedule.
  • Meeting or exceeding all advertising sales goals set by the publisher. Making the minimum number of sales calls and meetings assigned.
  • Keeping all systems up-to-date with current information and notes. With the assistance of the Publisher and other supervisors, the Ad Dir. is also responsible for negotiating positioning and rates.

Position Requirements:

  • Preferred candidates will have at least 7 years advertising sales experience and proven staff management skills.
  • Must have impressive oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to consistently present a professional image at all times and exhibit a natural and impressive presentation style in person with clients.
  • Travel outside of Los Angeles is required.

Book Publishing Production & Design, New York
Alyson Books welcomes an intern who is interested in learning all the processes of how a book gets designed, edited and finalized for sale. The chosen intern will be proficient in Quark, Microsoft Word, some Excel and have Mac proficiency. Also, we'll be asking for some proofreading capacity, good grammar skills, quick reading and scanning abilities, the ability to set up and maintain files (disk and paper) and good text management skills.

Book Publishing Marketing & Publicity Intern, New York
Interns will have the opportunity to work with the Marketing & Publicity Manager who is responsible for strategizing and directing Alyson Books' marketing and publicity initiatives. The ideal intern candidate will have strong a strong interest in book marketing, publicity, branding and strategy. Marketing and research experience and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Editorial experience (print) is a plus. The intern will assist with preparing seasonal marketing materials, updating media lists, processing review mailings, writing publicity and marketing materials, etc.

Advocate.com is looking for editorial interns in New York to assist the News Features Editor in generating news stories for Advocate.com. We are looking for young journalists with exceptional reporting, writing, and editing skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Interns work closely with editors and have ample opportunities to write. Prior news reporting and writing required. Submit resume, cover letter, and three writing samples.

Editorial (magazines)
Editorial internships are offered in Los Angeles, for The Advocate and Out magazines, and in New York for Out magazine. Interns will assist with various support projects such as editorial gathering, research, proofing and other related editorial and administrative tasks. Some writing and editing assignments may be possible, depending upon qualifications, but cannot be guaranteed. Interns are invited to take a place at daily editorial planning meetings and will work along with editors, graphic artists and other staff as issues are created according to the magazine's production cycle.
 
Preferred editorial intern candidates will have a related field of study and a career interest in journalism or publishing. Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills are required.

Editorial & Photo Intern
An internship to assist the Associate Editor and Photo Editor for The Out Traveler magazine is being offered in Los Angeles. Intern will assist with various support projects such as editorial and photograph gathering and research, proofing, web site production and maintenance, and other related editorial and administrative tasks. Some writing and editing assignments may be possible, depending upon qualifications, but cannot be guaranteed. Interns are invited to take a place at weekly editorial planning meetings and will work along with the editors and the art director and other staff as issues are created according to the magazine's production cycle. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to learn more about the travel world and magazine publishing.
 
Fashion
Fashion internships are offered with Out magazine editorial staff in New York. Interns will assist the Fashion Director and Market Editor with organizing fashion features, gathering clothing, prepping photo shoots and supporting the fashion department with the administrative effort behind producing the fashion section of each issue.
 
Preferred candidates will have a related field of study and a career interest in fashion, photo editing, or other similar industry. Must be able to handle multiple projects and provide efficient and effective administrative support. Excellent personal communication skills are a must.

Online Marketing Intern
Online marketing interns have the opportunity to work in New York with our Director of Interactive Strategy who is responsible for strategizing and directing LPI Media’s online initiatives for our four websites – Advocate.com, Out.com, HIVPlusmag.com, and OutTraveler.com.  The Interactive strategy department oversees the implementation and delivery of online media campaigns for advertising clients, subscription growth of LPI’s print titles via online efforts, and our 1-to-1 relational online newsletters for each site. 
 
The ideal online marketing intern candidate will have strong a strong interest in Internet marketing, branding and strategy. Marketing and research experience and excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Editorial experience (print or online) is a plus.
