AIDS/HIV

AEGIS: In 1990, when Sister Mary Elizabeth, a Roman Catholic nun, started this electronic bulletin board, she was just trying to disseminate much-needed information about AIDS treatment. Little did she know that more than a decade later she would be running the world's largest database on AIDS and HIV. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif.-based service--called "the best of its kind" by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention--has close to 700,000 documents online, thanks largely to the nun's efforts to get government sources like the National Library of Medicine to make their data banks available free of charge.

AIDS-dot-ORG / Immunet: A nonprofit HIV/AIDS Web channel featuring complete AIDS Treatment News archive; audiovisual Continuing Medical Education; AIDS/HIV BookStore with book reviews, conference listings, AIDS hotlines; and new programs all the time. The New York Times lists Immunet as one of the top three Web sites in "maneuvering the maze for AIDS & HIV information."

Community AIDS Treatment Information Exchange: Chronicles advances in AIDS research and treatment.

CondomHall: CondomHall is a student volunteer organization dedicated to students and their sexual health. We provide condoms and condom advice/education all year long (summer too). There are even ways to get free condoms. Our safer sex mission is to help prevent unwanted pregnancies, the spread of AIDS, and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases among the student community. CondomHall is the only condom organization that gears itself completely toward students.

GMHC Living with HIV or AIDS: Resources and information for people dealing with HIV or AIDS. Facts about medical care, nutrition, financial concerns, legal concerns, and insurance issues.

HIVDrugResistance.com:  Provides information about HIV drug resistance and its effect on HIV treatment as a resource for the HIV community.  Presented by Virologic, a biotechnology company that develops diagnostic tests to guide and improve the treatment of serious viral, immunologic, and oncologic diseases, with a focus on HIV.

Hollywood Supports: Launched in the fall of 1991 by leading entertainment-industry figures to counter workplace fear and discrimination based on HIV status and sexual orientation. The prime objective is to ensure a safe working environment free of stigma, fear, and bigotry. Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA): The Gay Asian Pacific Alliance in San Francisco Bay Area is an organization dedicated to furthering the interests of gay and bisexual Asian/Pacific Islanders by creating awareness, by developing a positive collective identity, and by establishing a supportive community. GAPA was formed from the need for an organization to address, through a democratic process, social, cultural, and political issues affecting the gay and bisexual Asian/Pacific Islander community.

Bisexual Resource Center

Bialogue: Bi + Dialogue = Bialogue   “Taking action, not just offense!”
Bialogue is a national bisexual education and advocacy organization. Our mission is to dispel myths and stereotypes about bisexuality, address biphobia and bisexual erasure, educate the public on the facts and realities of bisexuality and to advocate for the bi community.

BiNet USA: As an umbrella organization and voice for bisexual people, BiNet USA will facilitate the development of a cohesive network of bisexual communities, promote bisexual visibility, and collect and distribute educational information regarding bisexuality. To accomplish these goals, BiNet USA will provide a national network for bisexual organizations and individuals across the United States, and encourage participation and organizing on local and national levels.

Bi Writers Association: The Bi Writers Association  provides a forum for bi writers to network, promote their work, dispel myths and stereotypes about bisexuality and assist the “gay press” to truly become the LGBT press.  This association includes writers in all genres from fiction to journalism to plays to poetry to TV and movie scripts to erotica to non-fiction, etc.

CONGRESS

Tammy Baldwin: First lesbian elected to Congress. Represents Wisconsin's 2nd District as a Democrat. Began her career in elective office as a member of the Dane County Board of Supervisors--the largest, most populated county in her district, which includes Madison. After four successful terms as a county supervisor, Tammy was elected state representative for the 78th Assembly District comprised of central and south Madison.

Barney Frank: The openly gay Democratic Congressman from Massachusett's 4th District. Prior to entering Congress in 1981, Congressman Frank served in state and local government.

Jim Kolbe: The openly gay Republican represents Arizona's 5th Congressional District, which includes Tucson. First elected to Congress in 1984, he has a long history of public service that includes being a page for Sen. Barry Goldwater from 1958-1960.

LGBTQ Alumni Associations: A listing of organized groups of LGBTQ alumni from a wide range of schools. The functions of the organizations listed vary from school to school - some organizations are purely social, others are tax-exempt education related non-profits. The P.E.R.S.O.N. Project (Public Education Regarding Sexual Orientation Nationally): Utilizes proactive strategies to improve the treatment of LGBT persons in K-12 educational systems. Advocates for The P.E.R.S.O.N. Project provide testimony before state and local boards of education, meet with educational policy makers at all levels of government, inform the public about educational equity issues, and furnish various resources for addressing these subjects in the classroom. They also call for an end to the censorship of information about the gay community in textbooks, course content, resource materials, and library offerings associated with public education.

The Safe Schools Coalition is a public-private partnership of 80+ organizations (government agencies, schools, community agencies, churches, youth/student groups, gay/lesbian groups, human rights groups) and 400+ individuals working to help schools become safe places where every family can belong, where every educator can teach, and where every child can learn, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: This arm of the national government has extensive information on all strains of hepatitis and answers to some frequently asked questions.

Gay and Lesbian Medical Association: In a resolution adopted in April 1999, the GLMA Board of Directors called for universal vaccination against hepatitis A and B for men who have sex with men. It is in the spirit of this resolution that the GLMA presents the following information on hepatitis and the vaccinations and other protection options which should be considered by all men who have sex with men. Hepatitis is a family of serious diseases, and men who have sex with men are infected much more often than the general public. Protect yourself, and protect those you care for.

Gay Men's Health Crisis: This New York City-based AIDS service organization provides a fact sheet on hepatitis A and answers questions about prevention and treatment.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report: The CDC guide to health care providers lists guidelines for prevention of hepatitis A by means of both active and passive immunization.

Online Hepatitis B brochure: This brochure was developed in cooperation with the Youth and AIDS Projects, a service program of the University of Minnesota.

Wessex Gay Men's Health Forum: Hepatitis can cause permanent liver damage and even kill. Some forms of this disease can stay with you for life. Hepatitis A and B can be passed on sexually, and gay men are particularly at risk. But there are safe and effective vaccines that can protect individuals from infection. IMMIGRATION

Gay Men and Women's Immigration Board: This discussion group is designed for lesbians and gay men people who have a same gender lover living abroad and whose lover is unable to get a visa to the US. We should be allowed to be together with our lovers but find ourselves in long distance relationships due to US immigration laws (see DOMA- the recent Federal law making same gender marriages in the US illegal!).

GLITF The Gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force (Australia): Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia and eligible New Zealand citizens are allowed to have their partners live with them in Australia. They can apply either from overseas or within Australia. Explanations of new Australian immigration laws and frequent Australian immigration news updates.

Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force: A nonprofit volunteer organization which challenges the widespread discriminatory impact of immigration law on gays and lesbians through a national program of education, outreach, and advocacy. Established in New York in 1993, the Task Force has chapters in ten cities in the United States. The Task Force is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, volunteer-run organization incorporated in the State of New York.

Gay & Lesbian Rights at ACLU The ACLU Lesbian & Gay Rights Project works for fair and equal treatment for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people. This means even-handed treatment by the government, protection from discrimination in jobs, schools, housing, and public accommodations, and equal rights for lesbian and gay couples and families. The Lesbian & Gay Rights and AIDS Projects work to achieve these goals through the ACLU's network of 52 affiliate offices in every state in the country.

GayWill.com is a web-base service that allows gays and lesbians to prepare their own estate planning documents. The Hate-Crime Network, formerly called HCDN, was created by a team of experienced hate crime victim advocates who know the importance of hate crime laws, recovery services, and improved police response. Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (LLDEF): A national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, and people with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Headquartered in New York City, with offices in Los Angeles and Chicago, LLDEF has national and regional expertise in all aspects of sexual orientation- and HIV-related policy and law.

Lesbian and Gay Law Association of Greater New York: A group promoting the expertise and advancement of lesbian and gay legal professionals. Theirs is the first Web site by an association of lesbian and gay lawyers.

National Center for Lesbian Rights: NCLR is a national legal resource center with a primary commitment to advancing the rights and safety of lesbians and their families through a program of litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. In addition, NCLR provides representation and resources to gay men, and bisexual and transgender individuals on key issues that also significantly advance lesbian rights.

National Gay and Lesbian Law Association (NLGLA): A national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, and affiliated lesbian and gay legal organizations. Established in 1988 and an affiliate of the American Bar Association since 1992, NLGLA sponsors year-round regional and local events throughout the United States. NLGLA has rapidly become a national voice for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgenders in the legal profession.

National Journal of Sexual Orientation Law: The first online law journal in the country and the second devoted exclusively to legal issues affecting lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals. The journal's primary purpose is to disseminate information and ideas about law and sexual orientation in an efficient and timely manner but without duplicating the recent inclusion of articles on sexual orientation in traditional law reviews. The journal specializes in four distinct types of works: 1) reports and studies germane to gay and lesbian legal issues; 2) transcriptions of proceedings, panels, and programs; 3) briefs filed by litigators around the country in key cases; 4) essays, student work, and other forms of traditional law review scholarship that, due to space limitations, may not be published in traditional reviews and journals.

Queer Legal Resources: An extensive collection of materials devoted to gay and lesbian legal issues, including a monthly summary of cases important to gay/lesbian and HIV/AIDS jurisprudence.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network: With a nationwide network of over 200 attorneys from the best law firms in the nation, SLDN offers the legal advice and assistance that service members need to effectively respond to investigations. SLDN works closely with its allies in the military, Congress, and the media to serve those military members at risk. In addition, SLDN carefully documents abuses of the military policy on homosexuals and uses the data gathered from the field to push for policy change.

National Organization for Women/Lesbian Rights (NOW): The first major national women's organization to support lesbian rights. Lesbian rights have been one of the group's priority issues since 1975 and were the theme of national conferences in 1984 and 1988. Through the years NOW activists have challenged antigay laws and ballot initiatives in many states.

Romanticgals.com is a Thai lesbian community website effort based in Bangkok. Our site is in Thai and English and we have a chat room, which draws in a lot of Thai lesbians living/studying in the states. We have also have a regularly updated guide to lesbian bangkok for English speaking visitors from States/elsewhere. Romanticgals is non-profit and run by and for Thai lesbians (and their non-Thai partners.)

Suburban Lesbians of Michigan launch their new website at www.Slomorg.com The group is a lesbian network that was established in September of 2002 as a way for lesbians within Michigan to get to know one another and interact in an online community. The new website incorporates a local lesbian business directory, classified ads, and members only personals.

Wendy's Hope: Reaching Out to Lesbians With Cancer and Other Life-threatening Diseases: After Jacquelin Welter lost her partner, Wendy Sukman, to breast cancer in 1998, she launched Wendy's Hope, the first support group in Southern California for lesbians with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, their life partners, and other family members. A bereavement support group is also available. Meetings for both groups are held at the City of Hope West Los Angeles Cancer Center. Citizens Against Homophobia (CAH): A Boston-based group that uses mass media campaigns to reduce homophobia. The group has produced public service announcements for radio that provoke listeners to rethink their reactions to lesbians and gays and "keep things in perspective." Aimed specifically at youth, the radio spots will be distributed primarily to college radio stations, whose listenership includes many teens and people in their early 20s. Recognizing that this age group typically confronts difficult issues about sexuality, CAH hopes to provide a positive, educational message about gays and lesbians.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network: With a nationwide network of over 200 attorneys from the best law firms in the nation, SLDN offers the legal advice and assistance that service members need to effectively respond to investigations. SLDN works closely with its allies in the military, Congress, and the media to serve those military members at risk. In addition, SLDN carefully documents abuses of the military policy on homosexuals and uses the data gathered from the field to push for policy change.

Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies(GLIFAA) The officially recognized organization representing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender personnel in the US Department of State, US Agency for International Development (USAID), Foreign Commercial Service, Foreign Agricultural Service, and other US foreign affairs entities.  US Diplomats at home and abroad!

Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund: The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund is the only national organization committed to increasing the number of openly gay and lesbian public officials at all levels of government. The Victory Fund recruits, trains, and provides qualified openly gay candidates with the financial and technical support they need to run winning campaigns. The Victory Fund is the nation's 14th largest nonconnected PAC and has a membership of over 9,000 nationwide.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC): The Human Rights Campaign works to end discrimination, secure equal rights, and protect the health and safety of all Americans. Backed by a national staff as well as volunteers and members throughout the country, HRC lobbies the federal government on gay, lesbian, and AIDS issues; educates the general public; participates in election campaigns; organizes volunteers; and provides expertise and training at the state and local level.

Log Cabin Republicans: A 10,000 member organization of gay and lesbian Republicans advocating gay issues within the Republican Party.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF): The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is a leading progressive civil rights organization that has supported grassroots organizing and advocacy since 1973. Since its inception NGLTF has been at the forefront of every major initiative for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. In all its efforts NGLTF helps to strengthen the gay and lesbian movement at the state and local level while connecting these activities to a national vision of change.

The International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators, Inc.: IAL/GPC is a nonprofit organization made up of many cities producing Gay & Lesbian Pride events worldwide. The group holds an annual international conference in October to conduct corporate business, discuss future plans, politcal concerns, merchandising, operations, and logistics for the planning and production of a variety of Gay Pride events that are held around the globe. There are five yearly regional conferences also held, four in North America and one in Europe (European Pride Organizers Association). The International Gay Pride Theme is also chosen by the general membership in the plenary session.

SELF-HELP

Gay Men's Domestic Violence Project, Cambridge Mass. : Founded as a non-profit organization by a survivor of domestic violence in 1994, The Gay Men’s Domestic Violence Project (GMDVP) provides community education and direct services to gay, bisexual, and transgendered male victims and survivors of domestic violence. It now has a growing pool of volunteers and speakers, and four staff members. GMDVP relies on the grassroots support of survivors, its volunteer base, the LGBT community, and other allies.

The Hate-Crime Network, formerly called HCDN, was created by a team of experienced hate crime victim advocates who know the importance of hate crime laws, recovery services, and improved police response. But they also know that for the thousands of people affected by hate crimes each year, none of that matters if they can’t tell anyone what happened.

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) addresses the pervasive problem of violence committed against and within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and HIV-affected communities. NCAVP is a coalition of programs that document and advocate for victims of anti-LGBT and anti-HIV/AIDS violence/harassment, domestic violence, sexual assault, police misconduct and other forms of victimization. NCAVP is dedicated to creating a national response to the violence plaguing these communities. Further, NCAVP supports existing anti-violence organizations and emerging local programs in their efforts to document and prevent such violence.

Camp Lavender Hill
We offer a week-long summer camp for children of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families.  Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment for children of alternative families ages 7-14.  Children, adolescents and young people of all ages have a strong need for acceptance, validation and a sense of belonging.  By providing these children with an alternative to traditional summer camp, Camp Lavender Hill offers them the opportunity to enhance self-esteem in a place where differences and diversity are celebrated.

CondomHall: CondomHall is a student volunteer organization dedicated to students and their sexual health. We provide condoms and condom advice/education all year long (summer too). There are even ways to get free condoms. Our safer sex mission is to help prevent unwanted pregnancies, the spread of AIDS, and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases among the student community. CondomHall is the only condom organization that gears itself completely toward students.

Gay and Lesbian Helpline
The Gay and Lesbian Helpline provides free confidential information, referrals, crisis intervention, and support to callers seven evenings a week. OutProud!: The National Coalition for Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Youth serves the needs of these young men and women by providing advocacy, information, resources, and support. OutProud!'s goal is to help lesbigay youth become happy, successful, confident, and vital gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults. OutProud! provides outreach and support to teens just coming to terms with their sexual orientation and to those contemplating coming out and can assist in finding local sources of friendship and support.

The Trevor project is a nonprofit endeavor created by the makers of TREVOR to promote tolerance for gay and questioning youth, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group. Statistics have shown that gay teens are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers, and The Trevor Project hopes, through its efforts, to prevent some of those tragedies from occurring.

YoungGayAmerica is a long-term research project/road trip adventure dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ youth. We aim to educate and inform LGBTQ youth about their importance in society by placing their individual stories in an international forum; to foster and encourage the exchange of ideas by queer youth on issues pertinent to queer youth (to allow their voices to be heard); and to promote positive self-image and sense of belonging.
