The elder statesman of roots reggae, Burning Spear (aka Winston Rodney) is one of the genre's true greats. For over 35 years he has used music to celebrate the teachings of Marcus Garvey and spread his message of social justice.

BURNING SPEAR IN ONE MINUTE
  • Converted to Rastafarianism after seeing himself reflected in his bathroom mirror as a Rasta
  • Burning Spear was the name given to Jomo Kenyatta, first president of the Kenyan Republic
  • In 1966 Bob Marley arranged Spear's audition at Studio One (They were both originally from the St. Anne's area of Jamaica)
  • Rupert Wellington and Delroy Hines provide the harmonies on much of his classic mid 70s material
  • Contributed a track to the Grateful Dead tribute album, Dedicated
  • After seven unsuccessful nominations he finally won a Grammy for his 1999 album, Calling Rastafari
  • A truly international star, he has an especially big following in France
