Bob Dylan Bob Dylan
Protest-singer, prophet and people's poet, Bob Dylan is undoubtedly the most influential artist of the last forty years of popular music. In both quantity and quality, his musical output remains virtually unrivalled, and no other songwriter has ever used image and narrative to such great effect. Simply crucial.

BOB DYLAN IN ONE MINUTE
  • Dylan's real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman (hence the title of folk-singer Ralph McTell's tribute to Bob, "Zimmerman Blues")
  • Dylan had a part in the classic 1970s Western 'Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid', playing a knife-throwing drifter with the mysterious name Alias.
  • Dylan hitchhiked to New York to meet Woody Guthrie, one of his biggest influences (see early track "Song to Woody").
  • He split his audience and appalled the folkie purists at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 by performing on electric guitar, backed by a full band. He never looked back.
  • His son Jakob is also in the music business with his band The Wallflowers.
  • He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University Of St. Andrews.
  • Dylan gave his first television interview in 19 years in 2004, on American TV network CBS's '60 Minutes'.
