Gram Parsons Gram Parsons
The doomed poster boy of country rock. He was one of the first of his generation to see no problem with loving George Jones as much as the Rolling Stones. His tenure with the Byrds resulted in one of the first country rock albums - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. His legendary status was cemented by an early demise, leaving behind only two classic solo albums, both featuring young protegee, Emmylou Harris.

Gram Parsons IN ONE MINUTE
  • Gram's real name was Cecil Ingram Connor III.
  • Though his mother's family were wealthy his father was Coon Dog Connor, a ranch-hand, singer-songwriter who committed suicide when Parsons was 13.
  • Formed his first band, the International Submarine Band, while he was a divinity student at Harvard.
  • He joined the Byrds for 3 months but in that time they appeared as the first rock band on the Grand Ole Opry.
  • With the Byrds' Chris Hillman he formed the Flying Burrito Brothers, often regarded as the first country rock band.
  • He was a friend of Keith Richards and was mooted co-author of "Wild Horses".
  • His body was famously stolen and cremated in the desert by his friend and manager following his death from a heroin and tequila overdose at Joshua Tree National Monument.
