JAMES CARR IN ONE MINUTE
  • His father was a minister and he began singing in church at 9 years old.
  • Both tired of the gospel scene, a timely meeting with songwriter Roosevelt Jamieson led to a winning partnership
  • The Stax record label turned him down, but he went on to record on the Memphis based Goldwax label.
  • His singing was described as 'soul so deep, you'll never find the bottom'.
  • One of the only singers to rival Otis Reddings' intense and emotive vocals - although some aficionados claim Carr was actually better.
  • A troubled genius, Carr suffered from a rare mental depressive disorder which capped his success.
