I am an African speech by Thabo Mbeki (8 May 1996)
I am an African. I am born of the peoples of the continent of Africa. The pain of the violent conflict that the peoples of Liberia, Somalia, the Sudan, Burundi and Algeria is a pain I also bear. The dismal shame of poverty, suffering and human degradation of my continent is a blight that we share. The blight on our happiness that derives from this and from our drift to the periphery of the ordering of human affairs leaves us in a persistent shadow of despair.

lesbian and bisexual women's health

Last Updated: February 3, 2005

July 14, 2005: Many organisations produce material on lesbian and bisexual women's health but there is not, to our knowledge, any international platform that reflects this work and facilitates its dissemination.

ILGA, the International Lesbian and Gay Association, would like to collect information from organisations from all over the world and give the opportunity to women in each region to illustrate their initiatives, to inspire each other as well as express their opinion.

ILGA is working on a report on "Lesbian and Bisexual Women's Health - Global Concerns and Local Issues." The report will include a general section on health with the description of the most common risks and diseases affecting lesbian and bisexual women. Another section will focus on local issues. People with knowledge in this field will be given the opportunity to share their experience.

In order to highlight positive initiatives to promote health amongst lesbians, we are looking for information on prevention campaigns, training seminars, studies, publications, articles, leaflets, postcards, videos or any other material. The selected material will be advertised in the report with a short presentation of the organisation that issued it.

This report will be sent to lesbian and bisexual organisations around the world. It will also be made available to LGBT organisations and women's organisations dealing with lesbian and bisexual women's health.

We would greatly appreciate if you would send us this material, by email if possible, to:
