Policy Council Meeting in Berlin, June 2006
The Policy Council of the World Jewish Congress, headed
by Rabbi Israel Singer, met in Berlin, Germany, on
28 June 2006, to discuss current issues of importance
to Jewish Communities around the world, and to the
wider world.
Amongst the participants
at the meeting were: former German Foreign
Minister, Joschka Fischer, former Archbishop of Paris,
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, former Hungarian Prime
Minister, Miklos Nemeth, former European Parliament
President, Simone Veil, President
of the Foundation for the Memory of the Holocaust,
and former Austrian Chancellor, Franz Vranitzky.
The topics discussed included the threat
posed by the current Iranian regime; ways to
achieve a just and lasting peace to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict; building on the
successful dialogue between Jews and the Christian
churches, and extending the inter-religious
dialogue to other faiths, particularly Islam;
the recent upsurge
in anti-Semitic acts worldwide, and coordination
among the various restitution
funds and foundations that have been established
in many European countries.
The Policy Council, drawing on the collective experience
and expertise of those present, will make recommendations
to the WJC governing bodies as to how to best to fulfil
its mission of diplomatic and political representation
of Jews throughout the world, and how to approach these
specific issues.
On the eve of the Policy Council Meeting the WJC hosted
a dinner honouring
the work of the German foundation 'Rememberance, Responsibility
and Future'
