( fl c. 1484). North Netherlandish woodcutter. He was one of the best woodcut designers in the late 15th-century Netherlands and worked on books printed by Jacob Bellaert at Haarlem between 1484 and 1486. His designs are notable for their painterly style, preoccupation with natural phenomena and lively narrative. The borrowing of figures, motifs and compositional schemes from paintings attributed to the Master of the Tiburtine Sibyl supports the conclusion that his designs originated in that Master’s workshop. After Bellaert’s press ceased operation in 1486, the Bellaert Master’s style became the dominant influence in Antwerp book illustration and remained so into the 1490s.
