Joseph Master

( fl Reims, c. 1245–55). French sculptor. The name was coined by Vöge to single out the sculptor of the figure of Joseph from the Presentation in the Temple group on the left jamb of the central portal of the west façade of Reims Cathedral. The Joseph Master’s hand may be detected also in the Maidservant on the same jamb, the ‘smiling angel’ from the Annunciation group on the right jamb and the angel who escorts a martyred saint, probably St Denis, on the left jamb of the north portal. The sculptures were probably carved c. 1245–55.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
