Master of the Karlsruhe Passion
( fl c. 1435–65). German painter. He was active in the region around Strasbourg and is named after a Passion altarpiece dated c. 1440–50. Seven panels have survived: the Agony in the Garden, Crowning of Christ with Thorns, Christ Carrying the Cross, Disrobing and Christ being Nailed to the Cross (all Karlsruhe, Staatl. Ksthalle); the Betrayal (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz-Mus.); and the Flagellation (priv. col., see Muller, no. 70). Along with Konrad Witz, Caspar Isenmann and the Master E.S., the Master was one of the most significant artists of the Upper Rhine area of this period. The identification with HANS HIRTZ, however, who was in Strasbourg between 1421 and 1462, is hypothetical. The stained glass in St Wilhelm and Alt St Peter, Strasbourg, has also been attributed to him, as has a fresco of scenes of the Passion for the Dominican church in the same city that survives only in an engraving of 1621 by Bartholomäus Dietterlin (Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.).
