Master of Lourinhã
( fl 151025). North Netherlandish painter, active in Portugal. Two of the most representative works by this anonymous Master are now at Lourinhã (Estremadura), from where he takes his name. He worked between 1510 and 1512 in collaboration with Frei Carlos on the triptych of the Infantes (Lisbon, Mus. N. A. Ant.), which includes portraits of the sons of Manuel I, Dom John (the future John III) and Dom Luís. The altarpiece of Funchal Cathedral, Madeira, has 12 panels relating to the Eucharist, the Life of the Virgin and the Passion (151015). It shows the influence of engravings by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer and Jacob Cornelisz. of Amsterdam, as well as the aesthetic of Dutch painting.
