Master of the Munich Arrest of Christ
( fl c. 1455–c. 1480). Netherlandish painter. Schöne attributed two works, the Arrest of Christ and the Resurrection (both Munich, Alte Pin.), traditionally ascribed to Dieric Bouts I (see BOUTS, (1)), to an anonymous artist whom he called the Master of the Munich Arrest of Christ. (In 1906 Voll had attributed them to Albert van Ouwater.) Schöne included ten other paintings usually attributed to Bouts in the oeuvre of this painter, whom he considered to be a close follower of Bouts and Ouwater. Among these were the altarpiece of St Hippolytus (Bruges, St Sauveur) and the Coronation of the Virgin (Vienna, Gemäldegal. Akad. Bild. Kst.). The main works in Munich were originally part of a larger altarpiece from the St Lorenzkirche in Cologne. On the reverse of the panels are grisaille figures of St John the Evangelist (Munich, Alte Pin.) and St John the Baptist (Cleveland, OH, Mus. A.).
