Master of the Passion of Christ

( fl first half of the 15th century). Swedish painter or group of painters. The differences in skill between the 40 or so wall paintings in the island of Gotland attributed to this Master suggest that a workshop rather than a single artist was responsible for them. The same pattern with small variations has, however, been used everywhere for the Nativity and the Passion of Christ and was probably inspired by a German woodcut series. The arrangement of the paintings in a row along the wall, very much like wall hangings, has parallels in northern Germany but is rare on the Swedish mainland. The length of the series varies, and sometimes the legend of a saint is added, for example St Margaret of Antioch and St Catherine of Alexandria or, more often, a number of separate saints, placed in painted niches along the walls. St George and St Martin seem to have been the most popular.
