( fl c. 1500). North Netherlandish painter. He is named from a panel depicting the Conquest of Rhenen by Jan II of Cleves in 1499 (Amsterdam, Rijksmus.). Schmidt-Degener identified him in 1933 with the Master of the St Elisabeth Panels, but Buijsen has shown on stylistic grounds that they were two artists. One other work, Christ Presented to the People (Amsterdam, Rijksmus.), has been attributed to the Master of Rhenen. The two scenes reveal an interest in anecdotal detail and are painted in a similar style (Buijsen, figs 1 and 2) that is especially noticeable in the figures and architectural features. The figures are characterized by their wooden movements and emphatic gestures and in some cases show the same physical features and poses.
