Master B.F.

( fl Milan, c. 1486–1545). Italian illuminator and painter. The initials B.F. appear on a group of miniatures painted by a Lombard artist, clearly a follower of Leonardo da Vinci. They include an Adoration of the Magi (New York, Pierpont Morgan Lib., MS. M. 725) and an Entombment (London, BM, Add. MS. 18196), as well as a number of other miniatures dispersed in various museums and private collections. A number of different hypotheses have been proposed, and some scholars now tend to accept Wescher’s identification of the Master as Francesco Binasco, an illuminator documented at the court of Francesco Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan (reg 1521–35). Binasco was also a goldsmith and an engraver, and in 1513 he was working at the Milan mint in the service of Massimiliano Sforza (Levi D’Ancona).

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
