Master FVB

( fl c. 1475–1500). South Netherlandish engraver. He has been named after a group of engravings, which bear the initials FVB on the lower edge. Although he has been identified as Franz von Bocholt or as F. of Bruges, there is no clear evidence to support this. His known work consists of 59 engravings (see BELGIUM, fig. 14), their subjects including scenes from the Old Testament, the Virgin and saints, with genre scenes and a few ornamental sheets. The engravings are distinguished by their technical brilliance, for example in the consistent use of crosshatching, which was modelled on the work of Martin Schongauer. The figures were conceived monumentally and drawn with conviction. Most of the compositions and individual figures were drawn from works by Schongauer or, in particular, from early Netherlandish painting. Connections can be seen with Rogier van der Weyden (for example the Annunciation; Lehrs, 1930, no. 3), Hans Memling and Dieric Bouts I. The master’s principal work, the Judgement of Solomon (L 2), like the treatment of the same subject by the Master E.S. (L 7), may have derived from a lost panel of Justice by the Dieric Bouts I.
