Master PW of Cologne
( fl Cologne, c. 1500). German engraver. Some 97 prints are attributed to him, of which the most the important are large-format Swiss War (see Lehrs, no. 18), a depiction of a theatre of war in the Lake Constance area in 1499 printed with six large copperplates, and the Round Card Game (L 2091). Though he was once thought to be a south German engraver, it appears that he worked in Cologne. The Raising of Lazarus (c. 1500; Berlin, Kupferstichkab.) is probably by his hand. It is possible that he is identical with the MASTER OF THE AACHEN ALTAR (see §I above), who worked in Cologne and served his apprenticeship in the circle of the Frueaufs and Jörg Breu I.
