The voiced palatal fricative is a type of consonantal sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is ʝ (crossed-tail j), and the equivalent X-SAMPA symbol is j\.

Features

Features of the voiced palatal fricative:

Occurs in

  • Swedish jord  [ʝuːɖ], "soil, dirt"
  • Dutch: the zachte g (soft g) in the southern pronunciation of g in Limburg, Flanders (instead of [ɣ])
  • Spanish: This sound occurs in Spanish and is spelled y. In dialects with yeismo, the traditionally palatal lateral approximant spelled ll has merged into this phoneme as well.
