President Bush Nominates Paul Wolfowitz Deputy Secretary of Defense

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate Dr. Paul Wolfowitz as Deputy Secretary of Defense.

Dr. Wolfowitz joins the Defense Department from his position as Dean of the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.  He is a veteran of both the Reagan and George H. W. Bush Administrations.  At the beginning of the Reagan Administration, he served as Director of Policy Planning for the Department of State and then Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.  In 1986, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia.  Under President George H. W. Bush, Dr. Wolfowitz served as Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.  He has received several awards including the President's Citizen's Medal in 1991, the State Department Distinguished Service Medal in 1986 and the Defense Department Distinguished Civilian Service Medal in 1980.

Wolfowitz, 57, is a native of New York and a graduate of Cornell University. He received both his Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.   He presently lives in Maryland and is the father of three.
