The Grudge 2

The Grudge 2
Director: Takashi Shimizu
Stars: Amber Tamblyn, Edison Chen, Arielle Kebbel (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: An American woman (Tamblyn) travels to Tokyo to find out what happened to her sister, a nurse who took what seemed to be a routine caretaker job in a family home. She meets a journalist (Chen) with a mutual interest in the events that took place within the otherwise modest residence.

THE BUZZ: Few expected The Grudge to do as phenomenally well as it did, so it's no surprise that nearly the exact same team is back for the sequel - and inevitable third and final installment, provided part two performs. Note to Ju-on fans: If you have seen the second chapter of the Japanese trilogy, don't think you know what to expect here. Writer-director Takashi Shimizu has a few changes in store for these Americans abroad.

Man of the Year

Man of the Year
Director: Barry Levinson
Stars: Robin Williams, Laura Linney, Lewis Black (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: On a lark, Tom Dobbs (Williams), the host of a late-night political talk show decides to run for president. The thing is, he never expected to win.

THE BUZZ: Straight up, Barry Levison hasn't directed a worthwhile movie since Wag the Dog, but he did direct Robin Williams in one of his non-annoying films, Good Morning, Vietnam. Let's give them both the benefit of the doubt since they're trying to reflect the political climate that has caused millions of Americans to turn to satirical newsmen for hard truths. Unfortunately, Williams' rehab stint kept him off the campaign trail, so Universal might have another clunking comedy on its hands.

The Marine

The Marine
Director: John Bonito
Stars: John Cena, Kelly Carlson, Robert Patrick (Full Cast)
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation

The Plot: A Marine (Cena) looks to take out the fugitive (Patrick) who kidnapped his girlfriend and left him for dead.

THE BUZZ: Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment has more than just movies planned for its latest brand extension; look for some buff, completely hairless characters to invade your TV space in the coming year as well. No rumor yet as to who is getting what kind of show, but with The Marine and See No Evil in the can, and The Condemned on deck, it's obvious the WWE is making a push to control the big and small screen. The movie's trailer, which traffics in thoughts of Rambo, Walking Tall, Falling Down, Marky Mark, has become one of most popular clips of the month ...

Message Boards: Finally! A movie you don't have to watch to know it will be crap...  |  Talk about a cheesy recruitment film

Shortbus

Shortbus [limited]
Director: John Cameron Mitchell
Stars: Sook-Yin Lee, Peter Stickles, PJ DeBoy (Full Cast)
Studio: ThinkFilm

The Plot: A group of New Yorkers caught up in their romantic-sexual milieu converge at an underground salon infamous for its blend of art, music, politics, and carnality.

THE BUZZ: John Cameron Mitchell finally returns with his long-in-development second film. Mitchell cites the film's improvisational nature (he cast some of his players before the script was even written) as the reason it took a bit to get Shortbus going. Naked actors is enough to generate tons of publicity, but we imagine the pressure's on the writer-director to create something as lasting as his treasured Hedwig. But when he indicates his new film displays "an unusual kind of patriotism" and reminds us that "voyeurism is participation," we're reminded of his brilliance.

Message Boards: did the actors get any STDs from the real sex?  |  Should we also use real bullets onscreen?

Infamous

Infamous [limited]
Director: Douglas McGrath
Stars: Toby Jones, Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Independent Pictures

The Plot: While researching his book In Cold Blood, writer Truman Capote (Jones) develops a close relationship with convicted murderers Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.

THE BUZZ: From a year or so back, we vaguely remember Douglas McGrath saying his film was going to focus more on Truman Capote's complex relationship with Hickock and Smith, and less on the celebrity he found after publishing In Cold Blood. So we waited and waited until the film's Venice premiere and looked for reviews with the clearest insights as to its relative strengths and weaknesses. We understand star Toby Jones works harder than the screenplay, which fails to illustrate how Capote was broken by his return to a swinging life in New York City after unearthing that horror in Kansas.

Message Boards: How is this possible? Capote and Infamous?  |  Is anyone hoping Infamous will be less boring version of Capote?

Little Children

Little Children [limited]
Director: Todd Field
Stars: Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, Patrick Wilson (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: On the playgrounds, around the pools, and in the streets of their small community, the lives of suburban adults balking at the responsibilities of parenthood intersect in surprising and potentially dangerous ways.

THE BUZZ: Todd Field's adaptation of Tom Perrotta's suburban-pathetic novel is, in my opinion, the movie by which all of this year's potential Oscar candidates should be gauged. It's still early, but we'll go on the record and say the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay races are between this film and Flags of Our Fathers, and that Kate Winslet is perhaps the only foil for Helen Mirren in the Best Actress category. Elsewhere: Connelly will be placed in the Best Supporting Actress pool, and Patrick Wilson will parlays his stay-at-home Dad role into a Best Actor/Supporting Actor nomination.

Deliver Us from Evil

Deliver Us from Evil [limited]
Director: Amy Berg
Stars: Oliver O'Grady, Thomas Doyle (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: A documentary on Father Oliver O'Grady, a Northern California priest and admitted pedophile who was harbored by the Catholic Church for more than 30 years.

THE BUZZ: Lionsgate's looking to stir up some trouble by sending Amy Berg's documentary out without a rating. After the MPAA gave the film's trailer a redband rating (as in: good luck getting a theater to pick up your film), the distributor thought to try its chances with theater owners, who can opt to play either a film or its trailer. It might help you to know the general feeling here is Evil's an R-rated film, but if Lionsgate had submitted the film to the MPAA, they would have had to follow their advertising guidelines as well.

Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker

Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker [limited]
Director: Geoffrey Sax
Stars: Alex Pettyfer, Mickey Rourke, Sophie Okonedo (Full Cast)
Studio: Weinstein Company, The

The Plot: After his uncle dies and his secret life as a spy is exposed, young Alex Rider (Pettyfer) is enlisted by MI6, Britain's secret intelligence organization, to pick up where his uncle left off. The newly trained super-spy investigates a businessman's planned donation of one of his supercomputers to every school in the country.

THE BUZZ: Anthony Horowitz adapts his own popular novel for director Sax (White Noise). But Alex flopped in his native UK, and with school back in session, look for critics to begin Operation Out-Pun come review time. (Like it will be screened for critics.) A week before its wide release on October 6th, Alex was pushed out a week and his screen count was severley diminshed.

Driving Lessons

Driving Lessons [LA/NY]
Director: Jeremy Brock
Stars: Rupert Grint, Laura Linney, Julie Walters (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: Young Ben (Grint) is saved from another dreary school vacation under his mother's watchful eye when he answers a help wanted ad posted by Evie (Walters), a retired actress. Her influential, sometimes bizarre behavior challenges Ben to come out of his shell and consider living his life on his own terms.

THE BUZZ: How cute is it that Ron Weasley's mom plays his Maude-like liberator in Jeremy Brock's directorial debut? But this time around, the boy goes for someone his own age. Still, though, it's nice to see Rupert Grint out of a school uniform.

The Departed

The Departed
Director: Martin Scorsese
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: Two men (DiCaprio and Damon) from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Boston State Police department and the Irish mafia, and as discoveries are made on both sides that compromise their positions, the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.

User Rating: *********_

THE BUZZ: One of the more non-linear crime stories in recent memory in the hands of a fumbly veteran, The Depahhhted promises to be the spectacle of awards season (next to Dreamgirls?). Per usual, Scorsese's gunning for Oscar, and rumor has it if it weren't for his film's ultraviolent third act, he might've finally nabbed the Best Picture statue. Although perhaps we're editorializing just a tiny bit there. So now the focus has turned on Jack Nicholson, who's bloodied performance is set to introduce him, and Scorsese, to the younger generation. Where does this leave Matt and Leo? In a lurch, a situation just like what their character have to face.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Director: Jonathan Liebesman
Stars: Jordana Brewster, Matthew Bomer, Diora Baird (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: On one last road trip before they're sent to serve in Viet Nam, two brothers (Handley and Bomer) and their girlfriends (Baird and Brewster) get into an accident that calls their local sheriff (Ermey) to the scene. Thus begins a terrifying experience where the teens are taken to a secluded house of horrors, where a young killer is being nurtured.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: After the cheapie original remake made over $80 million in the U.S. alone, it was just a matter of time before a new spin would be put on the old story of Leatherface. But shouldn't the origin story of a horror legend take more than 90 minutes to tell? And shouldn't it be more than a cloaked draft-dodging cautionary tale? (We stretched for that one.) Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls) replaces Marcus Nispel this time around (an even trade off), and Joanna Brewster replaces Jessica Biel as the main screamer. Advantage: Brewster, as we forgot she was in The Faculty.

Open Season

Open Season
Director: Roger Allers Jill Culton
Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Martin Lawrence, Debra Messing (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: A deer buddies up with a domesticated grizzly bear when the two animals are alone in the woods during hunting season. Meanwhile, a forest ranger who raised the bear, embarks on a desperate search to find her friend.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: Exactly who decided this would be official Ashton Kutcher week?

Jill Coulton, a non-Hollywood type and former storyboard artist for Pixar, teams up with veteran story writer Roger Allers for Sony Pictures Animation's second release (their first, Monster House, underperformed this summer and is getting a 3D re-release in October). And while the escaped/lost animal idea seems a little played out (ahem), count on Steve Bencich and Ron Friedman (Chicken Little, Brother Bear) to create a refreshing story for their extra-lively cast. We are, however, quite surprised SPA isn't giving Season a bigger push.

Employee of the Month

Employee of the Month
Director: Greg Coolidge
Stars: Jessica Simpson, Dane Cook, Dax Shepard (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: Upon hearing the store hottie (Simpson) will canoodle with the employee of the month, an uptight cashier (Shepard) and a slacker stockboy (Cook) square off to earn the honor.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: How refreshingly, um, low concept ... Something tells us the casting of Jessica Simpson will alienate the core audience of what looks to be, on paper anyway, a stoner comedy. And besides, the Costco girl should come across as something so magical you can't even exist in her realm. Simpson lost that allure when she put on those Daisy Dukes and shilled pizza bites. Put Anna Faris in a red smock and you have a crowd-pleaser.

The Guardian

The Guardian
Director: Andrew Davis
Stars: Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher (Full Cast)
Studio: The Walt Disney Company

The Plot: After surviving a horrific tragedy, rescue swimmer Ben Randall (Costner) turns to teaching, and soon encounters Jake Fischer (Kutcher), a cocky young man in need of a mentor. In time, Randall takes Fischer with him to Alaska, where he is to learn tough lessons on the Bering Sea.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: Wow, our eyes are full of salty tears already ... We almost needed a paragraph break in order to get into the life lessons this movie has in store for you. Call it the dramatic reshaping of Mr. Demi Moore, or the next step in Costner's attempt at career stability; more than anything, we get this title confused with Costner's The Bodyguard, and now all we can see is Ashton in leather pants, being carried off in Kevin's arms. AKA The Bodyguardian.

Jackass Number Two

Jackass Number Two
Director: Jeff Tremaine
Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: The Fab 11 return with all new stunts and gross-outs.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: Johnny Knoxville's TV show ended and gave birth to a wildly popular film back in 2002. Since then, Knoxville's embarked on a spotty movie career while his old cohorts have gone on to worse things (Bam Margera is particularly unwatchable, and former friend Chris Raab is sitting out the sequel). So why not round up the old gang and make another pile of cash? The entire cast and crew are back this second time around, and we understand the sequel is going to be more taboo and dangerous than its predecessor. Anyone up to try on a beard made of the cast's pubic hair? Read more here.

School for Scoundrels

School for Scoundrels
Director: Todd Phillips
Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Heder, Jacinda Barrett (Full Cast)
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

The Plot: A hapless meter reader (Heder) enrolls in confidence-building that will hopefully help him win over his dream girl (Barrett). His wishful thinking is complicated when his instructor (Thornton) also locks her in his sights.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: The guy comedy was big in 2005, so the Weinsteins are all, "let's put out an R-rated comedy of our own." Fan favorite Jon Heder, savvy comedy director Todd Phillips (did you hear about this, by the way?), and grumpy old man BBT should have no problem connecting with the 18-34 demographic here. The supporting cast alone is like a dream for the FHM set ... and hey, did you hear about the Jolie jab Thornton worked in?

The Plot: Huo Yuanjia (Li) overcomes personal and physical setbacks to become the most famous Chinese fighter at the turn of the 20th century.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: Can it be that Fearless is Jet Li's last action movie? The star wants to move away from the genre, but will his fans accept him as anything but an exceptional being. (I mean, do you want to see Jet Li as an aging cop or depressed dad?) Ronny Yu directs, and did you know he ditched Snakes on a Plane for this?

Gridiron Gang

Gridiron Gang
Director: Phil Joanou
Stars: The Rock, Xzibit (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: A counselor (The Rock) at Camp Kilpatrick, a juvenile detention center in LA, launches a football program to help rehabilitate a group of young inmates. After weeks of rigorous training, the Kilpatrick Mustangs look to compete against area high schools, where coaches and players alike are wary of mixing it up with criminals.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: Can you smell what the Rock's been cooking lately? After stinkers like Doom and Be Cool, a feel-good football drama based on an inspiring true story might be the one-time NFL contender's recipe for success. And from the look of the trailer, it seems as though the former wrestler will have plenty of monologues to help him make the transition to drama. Adapted from a 1993 documentary of the same name, Gridiron could put the action hero back in the game and offer docu filmmaker Phil Joanou a chance to break out of his embarrassing film funk, too. Though formulaic to a fault, we'll admit we get choked up watching the clip.

The Illusionist

The Illusionist
Director: Neil Burger
Stars: Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti (Full Cast)
Studio: Yari Film Group Releasing

The Plot: In turn-of-the-century Vienna, as magician Eisenheim (Norton) gains a public following, Crown Prince Leopold (Sewell) yearns to debunk his talent. Leopold dispatches Chief Inspector Uhl (Giamatti) to unveil Eisenheim as a fraud, though his target has in a mind a grand scheme that is rooted in his personal history and involves Leopold's intended (Biel).

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: Norton and Giamatti make any movie magical. And a score by Philip Glass is bewitching. At one point, New Line, Sony, Lionsgate, and the Weinsteins were all interested in distributing, but balked. Maybe it was the reported $20 million price tag that scared 'em away. Or was it Jessica Biel's accent? All the fake beards? Unfortunately, one of this film's biggest trick to date was its disappearance act after Sundance. We, like many others, are really just waiting for The Prestige to be released.

Message Boards: A little bit confused... *MAJOR SPOILERS*  |  Here's why the practicality of the illusions didn't matter.
