Graphic User Interface explained
Main info
The intial idea behind our styleswitching GUI; letting fans decide in which kind of environment they would like
to surf the site, be it in their favorite character, design or color settings. Due to some advanced scripting it
might however be possible that you can not see the site as it was meant to be (see to your right for a few small
example images). Below we will inform you on the usage of the styleswitching system and try to help you
understand and, if applicable, enable it on your own system.
««« | Changing your Graphic User Interface and style
There are two easy methods in changing your prefered GUI/style. If for any reason the site is not viewed like set forth in
the images to your right, please check the 'Minimal requirements' or 'Known problems' topics on this page.
- Through the main intro
Check the left topmost menu in the main intro
of our site and choose the prefered setting.
- Through every other page
Every page of our site is equiped with an easy styleswitching graphic at the top-right of the site. Click the
appropriate icon to choose a specific setting.
In almost all cases a user-interaction will launch our styler-switcher popup which in turn changes the interface of
the site alltogether into the new chosen GUI/style. This popup is needed to control an external set cookie which
enables your set style onto all pages under our domain. If you do not see the popup, you can not change the style.
We however checked it against lots of antivirus or protection software and all should work fine.
In case you are wondering... the intergrated styleswitcher DOES reload the page, but DOES NOT affect the switching
to previous or next pages or selections. All data is stored in a cookie, soo if you want to change to another style,
you can do it just that moment, on any page you are on, through the 'Choose your style' option on the top-right
corner of the site.
««« | Minimal requirements
Although we've taking great care in coding the site for all users (and their different browser or computer systems),
it could be possible that you're viewing the site as it was NOT meant to be viewed. Below are some of the minimal
settings which should be enable on your browser system to make our GUI and styleswitcher work properly.
- Accept browser 'cookies'
Before a cookie is set (which enables you to change, and your browser to remember your chosen GUI style),
the GUI should have changed to the default setting; the T-800 style (a red/grey interface with T-800
Endoskeleton menu). When choosing your style (in most cases through the buttons on the top-right of every
page) the entire site should change to another GUI. If this is not the case, your browser does not accept
the minimal cookie requirements.
Solution:
Go to your browsers 'Privacy' settings (available through the Internet Options menu) and enable cookies to
the following minimum setting: Medium High. Any setting above this ('High' and 'Block all cookies')
will NOT enable our cookie to be placed in your browser, thus the styleswitcher will not work.
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Though many browsers nowadays accept this as a standard, some individuals might have turned the acceptance of
CSS off in their browsers or any additional anti-virus or protection programs. Their browser will display the
default color settings (in most cases blue and purple links) and ignore any embedded font and data definitions.
Our site will look very ugly indeed. Almost all content is CSS enabled and none of the images will be viewable
(so we even wonder how you ever came to this page ;).
Solution:
Just accept CSS. Since we think almost 95% of our viewers will see the site as it was meant to be, we will not
continue about any other possible solutions to this problem. CSS is a webstandard these days. You can't get around
it... and if you are still surfing the net with it turned off... it'll probably be a dull place to be.
- Flash and Shockwave
Some of our content is build with Flash technology. Some other elements are Shockwave enabled. Many people think
that these are the same. However... Flash and Shockwave (and their specific plugins) are entirely different things.
Both have a seperate installed plugin and the first (Flash) is so commonly known on the net, that it even comes
installed with many browsers. Shockwave on the other hand should (in most cases) be manually installed by the user.
Since the Flash technology is so broadly enabled in all browsers, we've chosen to enable it in our site. A plugin
as widely spread as this, has its own updates to newer version. However... we have chosen to export most of our
flashed content to the version 4.0 or 5.0 format (give or take some MX components). The plugin is already up to
its 10th installment, so we can say with about 99% certainty that our site is viewable for all users.
Solution:
If, for any reason, you do NOT have Flash or Shockwave enabled on your system, check
here or the appropriate links
below for the latest Macromedia plugins.
- Macromedia Flash Player
- Macromedia Shockwave Player
««« | Known problems and their solutions
If all of the above has been enabled (or even a small portion of it should surfice), the site should work fine. It
could however be that there are still some problems. The site has been tested on a lot of different systems and browser
environments of which some are explained below.
- My browser is displaying its default font
In most browsers this is the font Times New Roman. The cookie
has NOT been set correctly!
Solution
It could be that you loaded our site for the first time and the cookie has not been set. Please click the
prefered style several times, each time waiting for the site to totally load. The cookie should now be set
(it sometimes takes a while for it to 'talk' correctly with your browser ;). If the problem is not solved,
then cookies might not be allowed or are restricted on your system: please check the appropriate
Minimal requirements
topic for more info.
- Firefox is showing bigger font and shifted graphics
This is a know problem throughout the webdesigning community. Appearently the Firefox browser does not interpret
the CSS coding correctly. Some CSS functions -though widely used in lots of sites AND a webstandard these days- are
not correctly interpretted by the Firefox engine. Since the launch of our site, most CSS problems we know of that
exist in Firefox have been resolved, with new upgrade to the browser system. But... it is still (for some reason)
ignoring widely spread settings one can easely make in Internet Explorer and other browsers.
Solution
There's not really a good answer to give. Since the majority of our visitors is viewing the site in Internet
Explorer 5.5 and above, we focus on that group when developing content and designing pages in CSS. Its a pain
in a webdesigners ass to build a site specificly for all browsers, be it Firefox, Opera or any other (Mozilla)
clone. Although the Firefox browser is gaining many new users each day, the greater percentage of users is on
either IE or Netscape... and thus its in our best interest to focus on that majority of users. As told before, Firefox
had upgraded its systems to show the CSS standards, so we think all should work fine. If not... please use
another browser to surf our site and experience it to the fullest ;).
- Windows XP does accept cookies but still it does not work
As far as we know we've seen this on two systems. The cookie is set. Still the browser incists on staying in the
same set style. We've checked the settings on one of the two system that had this problem and do not really know
a simple solution.
Solution (none at the moment)
The formention systems check did not answer our question why it did not work. But after one of the users reinstalled
XP (on top of all his already installed programs), for some reason the problem was gone. Maybe this has to do
with a combination of programs or errors in the system... but what the hell: "What else is new with Microsoft" ;).
We try to provide you all the available data on the useability of our site. Got problems not explained above or do you
have anything else to add and/or change, then be sure to contact us!
