Finding It Faster With Smart Browsing
Search engines are a great way to find information you're looking for, but you may not want to conduct a search every time you want to find a web site that you just know is out there.

The new version of Navigator in Communicator 4.06 and later offers powerful Smart Browsing features that help you quickly and easily find the information you need on the web. Instead of remembering long URLs or typing an entire address to go to a site, Smart Browsing lets you use plain language to find exactly the information you want. All you need to do is type a word or phrase into the Location field, and zing! You're on your way!

Smart Browsing includes three unique features: Internet Keywords, What's Related, and NetWatch.

Internet Keywords
Internet Keywords let you type plain language words or questions into the Location field. When you press Enter (Return), Navigator sends the query to the Internet Keywords database, which then decides what to do with your words.

  • If your word is a domain name, such as Netscape, Navigator will send you to the home page associated with that domain.

  • If your term is a popular company name, such as United Airlines, Navigator will look up the address and send you to that home page.

  • If your search is a popular topic, such as entertainment or kids, Navigator will direct you to a page of links related to that topic.

  • If all else fails, Navigator will automatically use Net Search to search the web for your query.
You Try It: Find What You Want Using Internet Keywords
  1. Type a word, phrase, or question into the Location field and press Enter (Return). Try some of these: Ford, Apple, Southwest Airlines, Webster's dictionary, video games, real estate, antique violins, and golf rules.

  2. Depending on what you type, Navigator will load either a company home page, a directory page related to your topic, or a page of search results.
In the examples above, the first four will locate the company home page (even though the second two are more than one word). "Video games" and "real estate listings" will take you to a directory page, and the last two queries will return a page of search results.

What's Related
Another part of Smart Browsing is the What's Related feature. After you load a web page, click the What's Related button on the Location field to load a list of pages that are related to the page you're viewing. It may take a minute for the results to load.

You Try It: Find Related Web Sites

  1. Click the What's Related button.

  2. Allow a few seconds for the results to load.

  3. When a list of pages loads in the drop-down menu, select a page to visit. Try some of the pages we searched for above, like Southwest Airlines (you'll get more airlines), or Webster's Dictionary Online (you'll get more research tools).
  Tips for New Users

  • Tip: NetWatch is a Smart Browsing tool that lets parents, teachers, and librarians limit the kinds of content Navigator can access. You can keep the browser from accessing sites that are rated adult or that are not rated at all. For help with setting up and using NetWatch, select Help, NetWatch from the Communicator menu bar, or visit the NetWatch home page.

  • Tip: To make your What's Related queries load faster, you can have Navigator preload the results. From the Navigator menu bar, select Edit, Preferences and click the categories Navigator and Smart Browsing. When the What's Related panel is at the front, click the Always radio button under Automatically load What's Related information. Then click OK to close the Preferences dialog box and return to Navigator.
