The links below are here to help you make the best use of the Library facilities (via the web) if you are a member and are currently residing outside the UK (even for a short period). As well as guidance on the Library there are links to pages on the website which may answer some of your other queries. The Online Library Catalogue:

Book and journal titles can be searched and requested via the Online library catalogue page. Members must be logged onto the website first before requesting books from the catalogue. You may borrow up to three books at any one time.

Journals and magazines are not available for loan.

Postal Service:

Library loans from our stock are despatched to you free of charge by courier service usually within 24 hours of receipt of your request. Delivery time depends on the postal service in your country but is usually estimated at between a few days to a couple of weeks. You are required to pay the return postage (by recorded delivery).

Enquiry Service for Engineers:

Brief research enquiries are answered free of charge. Charges start at UK pounds 50+VAT (member rate) for anything which involves more extensive research or use of charged online resources. Members registered as students have a discounted rate starting at UK pounds 30+VAT. More information regarding this service can be found on the Search Service web pages. Inspec searches carry a minimum charge of UK pounds 50+VAT for up to 25 abstracts. Websites for Engineers:

Websites for Engineers provides information on external websites which have been selected to assist with your own research into issues related to electrical and electronic engineering.

Document Supply Service:

Copies of articles and papers can be purchased from the library under the terms of the Copyright Act, using the Photocopy Request form and articles not held in our stock can also be supplied from another source such as the British Library at a charged rate.

Books not held in our stock can only be obtained for UK based customers and not overseas customers.

Electronic Journals:

Overseas members have remote access (i.e. from any Internet connection worldwide) to the following Electronic Journals services:

  • Table of Contents only service through a subscription based package with Swetswise
  • Wiley Electronic Journals - Members only: The library now has trial access to 7 full-text journals from Wiley, a major technology publisher.
  • EBSCOHost - Full text service - Members only.
  • Free Electronic Journals relevant to our field of interest listed on our website.

Electronic Books:

  • Members only have remote access (i.e. from any Internet connection worldwide) to the following e-books services:
  • Knovel - an interactive, electronic database of over 500 full text scientific and engineering books and references
  • The IT Reference Library - a collection of 200 IT books from major technology publishers, powered by Books24x7.

Publications for Sale:

Members receive a 20% discount on books published by the Institution, which are purchased online through publication sales

Tours of the Library Reading Room and Archives in Savoy Place, London:

If you are visiting London for meetings or a vacation, why not consider including a tour of the IET Library Reading Room, Archives (collections of the history of electrotechnology) and possibly other public rooms at Savoy Place, the London home of the IET? We can show you round and demonstrate the electronic services available to you, so you are able to make use of them from your office when you get back home. Tours are normally available (with notice) Monday – Friday 10.30 – 3.30 and take about 30 - 40 minutes.

Please mention if you would like to tour just the Library Reading Room (and electronic services), Archives or public rooms (the latter, only if accessible on the day) or all three. Further information on tours.
