REVIEW

Ronan Keating's third solo album is described as the chance for the public to see the real Ronan. Such statements are usually a warning to people that we are about to witness some kind of transformation. And certainly, when this album first reached my ears, I actually thought that I'd put the wrong CD on. His voice has changed in that it's deeper, more rugged and he sounds a lot older. It's hard to believe that he's still only 26 - not bad for someone who's sold 17 million albums.

But apparently this isn't the point - the real Ronan isn't just more mature and husky (despite what the vest top modelling on the album cover is clearly trying to tell us). No, the new Ronan is 'Ronan the Songwriter'. He has writing credits on all ten of the original tracks here, the two cover versions aside. This achievement would possibly be more impressive if there wasn't such a glittering set of heavyweight songwriters to help him out. These include David Frank (Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle"), Wayne Hector (Boyzone and Westlife regular) and in particular Paul Barry (the brains behind Cher's "Believe" and Enrique Iglesias' "Hero"). So whilst it's great to think that Ronan has reached the point where he wants to share his songwriting talent with us, he clearly still isn't confident enough to write alone and risk not selling records.

"Turn It On Again", the album's opener, is the most upbeat song on what is a fairly sober album. Written by Ricky Ross, it does remind me slightly of Deacon Blue's "Chocolate Girl". It's an upbeat, melodious tune which is destined to be a single.

Other highlights include "Last Thing On My Mind" which features vocals from LeAnn Rimes and "Let Her Down Easy", an old Terence Trent D'Arby song. Otherwise there's not much to recommend. "She Believes (In Me)" is a particularly sickly 'tears on your pillow' ballad!

Turn It On is sure to satisfy Ronan's many followers but with its lightweight selection of easy listening love songs I doubt he'll win too many new fans.

Turn It On is a compelling compilation of rocky tunes and ballards which are fused together by one of the finest vocalist of our times. Ronan Keating with his rich vocals has the unique ability to make any song come to life. This album is a clear winner with many 'feel good' songs, and of course, the ballards for which Ronan is renowned. Great songs, great voice, great album.

Turn it on is a big step away from the direction taken by the previous album Destination which Ronan himself felt after working the promotional life of it, was more the album Gregg Alexander would have made with his group the new rads, and didnt really say much about Ronan. With a recent change of management and a building confidence in his own writing abilites Turn it on gets him back on track I think on the journey to show us more of Ronan. 12 tracks, (14 in the UK) of which the majority are cowritten with an impressive array of established songwriters, but this is not unusual. Here on the BBC site there is an article on how to write songs, which covers this subject well. Ronan is on a learning curve, as he progresses in life so he will pick up experiences that he can bring to his songs, and I for one commend him for his non arrogant attitude in realising that songwriting in itself is a craft to be learned and not assumed. So as this is a reivew, lets talk about the album. For me the album has a natural pace, and covers all the tempos, from up with "Turn it on" and "Back in the Day" to mid with the duet with Leanne Rimes, to the slow ballads such as the outstanding track "First time" and "Let her down Easy". One of the most beautiful songs "This is your song" he wrote only days after the death of his mother, and it is a tribute to his band and fans alike that finally this song is included on an album. "I'm on my way" also deserves a mention, written with two of his band members, James McNally (Afrocelts) and Callum MacColl (long list of song writing credits with Brian Kennedy just to name one) this song is written about a changing relationship, which could easily sum up how Ronan feels about his own changing direction. Ronan's vocals show a growing maturity, and whilst some may mock his huskiness, there is a power and growing confidence that can only come from an artist that takes every opportunity to sing live. Here is a singer that doesnt need to resort to recording studio trickery to produce good vocals. Here on this album, he reaps the rewards that always singing live brings and as listeners so do we. To sum up, this album is nearer to Ronan the album than Destination. It is a song that the fans have indeed taken to their hearts as they also want to see more of Ronans developing songwriting skills. It is an album I would recomend to any non Ronan fans as well. Yes it contains love songs, maybe it is middle of the road, but if that is so, point me to the white lines cos I am happy to follow them. Songs such as contained on this album, sentimental love songs, are the songs that come to mean to much to people in their lives, and you dont have to be a Ronan fan to appreciate that.
Jackie Riggs ~ London.

I have enjoyed all Ronan's albums (boyzone included) but this is by far his best. I love his re working of She belives in me and let her down easy. I also love the frsh uplifting new sound of his. 10 out of 10 Ronan
Mandee New Zealand

I think Ronans new album is great, the best he has produced so far, ok he doesnt write his songs alone, but credit where credit is due, the songs are different and at least they dont all sound the same like a lot of artists just now
Deborah Wood (Berwick upon Tweed)

well, i think Ronan is a great singer and pretty talent boy... "turn it on" is better than the last, as same the last was better than the first.. Ronan whit this let people in to know him much better and let see fancy era, where with every song u can feel so proud 'bout how one man could feel so much love 'bout his wife, kids, world and life. No doubts "turn it on" was one of the most expectin' albums!!
Magaly Snadoval

i think this is ronans best album so far in his career! this album has true meaning with such songs as this is your song and first time. But it also has the up tempo feel such as turn it on and back in the day! I think lost for words is not a true example of what is on the album it is one of the poorer songs.what an exellent album. with a lot of potential singles which are sure to well.
jacky north east

It's a excellent album, he's really very brillant...
Rosa

It's a great album, it's Ronan's best yet, it has a couple of rocky upbeat numbers that get ya feet tapping and oudles of the lovely ballads that only Ronan does best. His voice sounds better than it ever has, well done he said it was an album for the fans and it truly is, I'm happy!
Kate - London

Same old crap. All sounds the same, No wonder the album only made it to #21 in the charts. Small wonder that he mentions a Boyzone reunion again.
Lema/USA

This album is brilliant. His fans are happy with it and so is he. Although it hasn't charted well, it doesn't matter because we all enjoy it. There are some amazing songs on it and i just wish everyone would give it a chance!
Jillian Graham, Motherwell

I lov this new album!! he has an incredible talent, the songs are just brilliant!!!

Ronan's new album Turn It On shows so much maturity both in voice and music. He really has brought us some wonderful songs on this album, many of them co-written by him, but in the lyrics you can feel the very essence of Ronan. There are some rocky tunes, some midtempo and beautiful ballads. Each song has you hooked straight away. Sheer class!
June Papper, Lincolnshire

The best Ronan album to date. It's a great mix of pop/rock and a few ballads to sooth the soul. Fantastic and go ahead.....turn it on!
Eleonor- Toronto

TURN IT ON blows my mind! It is not an album of the typical mindless "society owes me" kind of music which is popular these days. It really is an album you can listen to over and over because the songs really mean something tangible and real. Ronan is a brilliant singer. He has this uncanny ability to pull the listener into the song, into the meaning, into the lyrics, through his vocals and his expression. He is pure class. Other singers just sing the words to a melody, or even worse, mime when they perform live. The tracks on this album are fantastic. It is a winner, and it is a MUST HAVE album.
Patricia (Australia)

I like a lot this album, lyrics are beautiful,it looks like more to Ronan than others albums,he did the music he likes and I find it's better when he does what he likes than when he sings songs which are not from him. I hope you have understood what I wanted to say cos It's a bit difficult for me to express it in english ! lol
Cécé from FRANCE

This is Ronans best album ever, the ballads are so beautiful The first time i heard She believes in me i started to cry, and also the song First Time is really touching, the complety album is so good i love all the songs, go on like this ronan we stand all behind you for the 100% !!!!!!!
Esther Koning (Netherlands)

Turn It On is a great album, special for many reasons. The most important thing about it is that all the tracks (except the two covers) were co written by Ronan himself. Ronan has a rare gift for writing grand melodies, pieces of music that have their very own special character, style, vibe or whatever you want to call it, making them unique and unforgettable. So it is no wonder that in the past he has been honoured with awards for writing the songs Picture of You and The Long Goodbye, and it is no coincidence that songs like Feel or Sea of Love are adored by those who were lucky enough to discover them as b-sides on his singles. This album contains a breathtaking collection of outstanding melodies. It doesn’t matter whether it is an energetic up-tempo song like ‘Back in the Day’, a romantic one like ‘First Time” or a rocky tune like the title track ‘Turn It on Again’ they are at all times excellent. Listen and feel how ‘I Wouldn’t Change a Thing’ gradually grows from a ballad to a huge passionate song! It is unusual to find an album with such a big amount of good tracks on it - each song has its own magic and could easily be released as a single. The best choice for a next single seems to be either Last Thing on my Mind - a fabulous duet with LeAnn Rimes (his best duet so far except for Melting Pot, where Ronan’s voice blends perfectly with Tracy Ackerman’s ‘dark’ voice) or the wild Back In The Day, however if you want to pick a song that would be the most representative of Turn It On you have to choose some other track: First Time, She Believes (In Me), The Best of Me or Hold you Now, because the most striking feature of this album are Ronan’s vocals. In most of the songs (those produced by Mark Tylor) there is a tangible contrast between thorough arrangements and Ronan’s rough vocals. Listen to Let her Down Easy – it really hits you. No matter how rich the accompaniment, the strong, hoarse, deep voice takes precedence in its own simple form - and in this case simplicity means brilliance. Weak songs? I can’t find any on this record. However if I have to point a finger at anything it would be Give You What You Want - the arrangement for this song is a bit simple, especially when you compare it to my favourite song, a real pearl on this album: Hold you Now - with its hypnotic rhythm, characteristic gentle piano phrase and amazingly rough vocals. Turn it On is definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard in the last few years. It is first-rate sophisticated pop with strong rock influences. These songs will last in time regardless of fashion and are a rare example of music made with honesty, passion and unique talent.
Elka, Poland

Looks like a lot of people agree that TURN IT ON is a terrific album. This is an outstanding effort from Ronan Keating, who had the courage to steer a course less travelled but infinitely more gratifying for both himself and the listening public. I for one cannot wait until Mr Keating’s 4th solo album, having been so impressed by this third one. Well done, Ronan.
Vaness from Australia

Overall, the album is raw. But we go get more than a glimpse of Ronan's songwriting skills. It is a prelude to more albums that will surely be SOLELY written by him. I agree with Jackie Riggs(London) that songwriting is an art, and Ro is learning his craft from the very best. The skills and discipline cannot be attained overnight. I am sure Turn It On is not meant to be a chartbuster, but his future albums will be!! I won't repeat some of the tracks that are excellent, as enough has been said. Well done, Ro!! Collaborations with ex-Boyzone members, perhaps? : )
Akim (Singapore)

Having listened to Ronan's newest album numerous times now I am still of the same conclusion - he is just 'magic'. An all round talent that does not ride on anyone elses coat-tails, gives credit where credit is due and he himself is a credit to the music industry. I have listened to Ronan since the beginning of his career and he only gets better and better. I still see that alot of people are all quick to try and find an area to critise and compare and it is sad that they can not praise and thank with the same speed and conviction. Thanks once again Ronan for touching my heart and giving me my smile.
Annie (New Zealand)

Huang Liu in China

My absollute favourite X-mas time album..All the time in my CD player. Most catchy songs for me - "Let Her Down Easy", "On My Way", "Turn It On" and "Back In The Day".
Ilze (Latvia)

Well, Annie, everybody's entitled to their own opinions, you cannot "criticise and compare" too, otherwise you are not "practicing what you preach". Yeah, Ro, well done, very well done!! Pure brilliance, really personalized album, vintage stuff from the Prince of Pop. Sums the review up, really. This is the best solo album I have listened to from him, mainly because of the singular fact that most of the songs are originals, though the other couple of "non-original" songs are brilliantly written as well. I believe, when the next couple of singles are Hits(!) [First time, Turn it on again(?)], people will start ripping of the CDs from the shelves, and made a brilliant comeback to the charts, (personally, it doesn't matter, because what counts are the potential hit singles, of which there are 5, at least). Where are you guys, Ronan fans? What are you waiting for? Don't download, BUY!! Change of management may have happen in Ro's camp, but I feel he's made the right move. Stagnation (no offence, Gregg Alexander/Rick Nowels) replaced by freshness, that's what the album is about, when you compare "Turn It On" to Ro's last 2albums.
MMBW (Singapore)

I had to wait till Christmas for the album but worth the wait he hasnt let us down what a brillant album there isnt one song I dont like cant wait to see him perform them in September, Well done Ronan you have produced your best album by far.
Shirley Callen Southampton

I think that Ronan is rubbish- he can't sing and his album is rubbish too, just like him!!!
Stephanie Lincolshire

Love this album as well as the first two solos and all the boyzone albums. One question- Who is the backing vocalist? in the insert it says "Mark Read" ! is this the same Mark Read who was in a1?????
Jo, London

i really do rate "turn it on",it's by far his best album yet my favourate songs are "first time" "turn it on again" "she believes" (in me)and "this is your song" and if you haven't had the chance to listen to it yet or even buy it i recomend it 10/10

Who ever wrote this artical obviously knows absolutly nothing about a brilliant album OR the talents which Ronan has! He is a brilliant artist and almost everything he has done has had great sucess! So why not lay off him a bit? What has he ever done to u?!?! The man oozes pop star and he has played a major part in every aspect of this album! It may take him a while until he fully writes a song on his own but, the man has talent, this is shown through this album. He is capable of great sucess at both song writing and performing so ......... GIVE HIM A CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he sure as hell deserves it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rant Over! Soz ton anyone who knows what talent Ro has!
Denise (Scotland, Motherwell)

I can't believe that people have so much to say about this boring talentless guy. He's a song thief, it must be Louis' influence.
Laura, london

Is that the sound of Gary Barlow calling Ronan to musical heavan. If it isnt then it should be because there's a place for him on Jane McDonalds cruise ship. Its called the ship of fools!
Brian, Dublin

Ronan Keating is a terrible artist his songs are terrible how he got a record deal i'd never know
Music Critic UK

i love this album. i still like Ronan's last album, Destination, but his voice and image has change since then and i like him as he is now.
charlotte cobbs, ferring

OUTSTANDING! If only you Ronan haters would listen to 'On My Way', then you would truly realise that this guy is gunna be around for a long, long time, and is massively talented. If 'On My Way' was released as a single - I can quite see it heading to the success of 'Everything I Do' and other big songs similar. The entire album is one that you want to listen to again, and again! It can pick you up from bad times, and make you feel so great - isn't that what music is meant to do? :o)
Matt Griggs, Suffolk

Turn it on? More like "Turn it Up!" I can think of no better album to have cranked up on my daily drive into work in my Sports Coupe. Some people love r'n'b or electro dance to have loud in their cruising machine but not me. Its Ronan all the way. Good production and what a voice!

Ronan Keating cannot sing. He should get a decent singing coach. Every time his mouth opens, I dive for cover underneath the nearest Infinite Improbability Drive.
