Education and Skills

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in Schools & Universities

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is very concerned about the decline of science, technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in our schools and universities.

To tackle this decline, and provide the UK with the skills and people we need for future prosperity, we need:

  • Appropriately subject-qualified and trained teachers, with access to continuing professional development
  • Suitable Science and Technology facilities to allow teachers to inspire the next generation
  • Joint work to overhaul the image of science, technology and electronics

Engineering and Technology Skills and Demand in Industry

Our 2006 survey of our business partners found that 40% of them believed they would be unable to recruit the right technically qualified staff over the next 4 years. Our findings continue to back the IET's long standing position that in the UK demand continues to outstrip supply in terms of qualified engineers and technicians.

Our Education Briefing (May 2006) outlines some of the measures we believe are vital if we are to encourage more young people into these areas.

Education and Skills Sector Panel & Policy Keys

The Institution’s Education and Skills Policy work is steered by our Education & Skills Sector Panel, chaired by Professor David M. Howard.

We also capture input from as many of our members as possible through our Education Policy Key information email service, which has over 3,000 members.

Information for students, schools and teachers

The IET also has a dedicated team working with schools and teachers to provide resources, careers advice and continuing professional development.

Information on their work can be on the IET Careers & Education Service.

Scholarships

The Institution of Engineering and Technology also awards around £400,000 in scholarships every year – more information can be found on the Scholarships Section.
