Research Policy

The Institution’s Members and Fellows work through a number of mechanisms to support and provide a IET voice for the research community, both in academia and industry.

In addition to working with government and stakeholders on policy issues through the Research and Innovation Policy Group, the IET supports with the BCS a joint expert group on Computer Science, the UKCRC.

Researchers may also find the Institution has a Technical and Professional Network (TPN) that relates directly to their field.

Research and Innovation Policy Group

Chaired by Professor Michael Sterling, the Research & Innovation Policy Group consists of representatives from industry, academia and government who work in the best interests of the UK science, engineering and technology. Work includes providing an IET voice to respond to consultations and informing policy with the collective expertise that IET members and fellows can offer.

International Reviews

The Engineering and Physic Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of their evaluation process use international reviews to benchmark current UK capabilities.  The reviews concentrate on a specific area each year, and a panel of international experts is convened to take evidence and input from those in the community.

The IET has played an active role in this process serving on review steering groups, and through providing evidence for the benchmarking panels.

Information from EPSRC on all reviews carried out to date can be found on the EPSRC website.

2006 International Review of UK ICT Research

For 2006 the international review will focus on information and communications technologies (ICT) research in the UK.  IET is a key part of the steering group, working in collaboration with the British Computer Society, and Intellect.  The aim of the review is to establish the international perception of the quality and impact of UK ICT research.

Details of the Review can be found on the EPSRC website.
