Back to Court Over Simpson Book? - April 04, 2007
O.J. Simpson's lawyer plans to go back to court to stop the upcoming auction for the publishing rights for Simpson's 'If I Did It,' ABC News reported. Last month, a Los Angeles judge ruled that the rights for the book would be auctioned off and the profits would go to the family of Ron Goldman, who was killed alongside Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994. Philip Roth Wins PEN/Saul Bellow Award - April 02, 2007
The winner of the first PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction is Philip Roth, the Associated Press reported. Roth, whose books include 'Portnoy's Complaint' and 'American Pastoral,' was awarded the PEN/Faulkner Award for the third time in 2007 for his latest book, 'Everyman.' CONTINUED »

Andre Agassi Memoir Goes to Knopf - March 29, 2007
Tennis star Andre Agassi's memoir has been bought by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House, the publisher announced yesterday. While the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, it has been reported that bidding for the not-yet-named book topped $5 million. CONTINUED »

Oprah Heads Out on 'The Road' - March 28, 2007
Oprah Winfrey announced that 'The Road,' by Cormac McCarthy, will be the next book featured in her famous book club. The book is published by Vintage Books, an imprint of Random House. 'Evident Destruction' and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named Featured on 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' Cover - March 28, 2007
Things don't look so good for Harry Potter based on the cover images of J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' released today by Scholastic. The images, which include a glimpse of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, are ominous indeed, especially knowing that Rowling plans to kill off two characters in the seventh and final book in the series. Lerner recognizes Prohibition's central issue: the desire to define morality narrowly and to force that definition upon others. Teeming with immigrants and overflowing with booze, New York City seemed an unlikely battlefield, but William H. Anderson and his Anti-Saloon League came, saw and conquered. Anderson began his fierce and creative anti-alcohol campaign upon arrival in the city in 1914; by 1920, Prohibition was constitutional. The author does a good job of exploring and explaining Anderson's strategies and of identifying the cultural and historical forces that enabled his initial successes, among them the identification of beer-drinking with Germans, America's opponents in World War I....A fine history of a most troubling time. ...Full Review
