Finding Digitized Materials:
Access to digitized books, pamphlets, and manuscripts is provided through a link in the item's library catalog record.

Browse vs. Search
There are two ways of finding books and manuscripts on the Women Working site: browsing and searching.

Browse
Browse > by Subjects: Topics will provide access to all Women Working books and manuscripts by topic heading. Clicking on one of these topic headings will return a list of book and/or manuscript titles sorted in reverse chronological order.

Each title on the list links directly to the digital item. Clicking on "Bibliographic Info" links to the item's associated catalog record, which also provides links to page images for the book or manuscript.

Browsing the People, Organizations or Dates and Events sections will provide access to select portions of Women Working books and manuscripts. These areas provide descriptive context and access to some of the digitized materials.

Searching
There are 2 kinds of searching available on the Women Working site.

  1. Search Catalog Records allows you to search for a particular term or phrase in the Bibliographic Information (the information found in the library catalog record which describes a given book).

Choose "Search Catalog Records" for finding:

    • A specific item by title, author, creator or publisher
    • Works about general subjects
    • Works whose central theme is about a person, place or event

Searches on this page will return a list of book and/or manuscript titles sorted in reverse chronological order.

    TIPS:

    • Keep search terms short, such as the author's last name or a single heading
    • You can limit the number of search results that you get by searching on 2 terms and separating them with and For example, textile and abbott

  2. Search Full Text allows you to search for a particular term or phrase in the Full Text (the transcribed text of the entire book) of ALL of the books and pamphlets on Women Working. Most manuscripts and handwritten materials will not have full text available. Your search results will be returned in a new window (see illustration below).

To search the full text of a single book, click on the "search" button that is in the top, left corner of the screen when you are viewing that book in the Page Delivery Service.

Choose a Full Text Search for finding:

    • Concepts or ideas not defined by one subject term
    • A person, place, or event that is not central to the main theme
    • Very specific topics

Searches on this page will return a list of book pages which contain your search terms. This list is arranged according to relevancy ranking. (Note that more than one chapter from the same book might appear on the list.)

    TIPS:

Search terms may be combined using the following operators: and; or; not; near

The default operator is and, so the following two queries produce identical results: harvard yard and harvard and yard. They will only match documents that contain both of the terms harvard and yard.

The and operator will match terms that occur anywhere in a document. To search for a phrase, enclose it in "quotation marks" like this: "harvard yard". This search which will only match documents containing the phrase harvard yard.

The near operator will match terms that are within 100 words of each other, regardless of their order.

Viewing and Navigating a text
