Taxes may be going up again in State College if the State College Borough Council passes its 1994 proposed budget.

The 21-year-old State College Area High School student hit by a car Thursday remained in critical condition yesterday at the University's Hershey Medical Center.

The adjustment will be tough, but Janet Knauer is confident she is up to the challenge of life as a State College Borough Council member.

With clouds moving into the area later this week, students can expect a little downpour. But put away the umbrellas -- this storm will brighten up the nights.

Some State College residents say improved relationships with their student neighbors over the last several years have contributed to a decrease in criminal mischief and noise disturbances.

SPORTS

The turf was drenched by the weather, and the players were soaked with sweat and rain. But Becca Main and Kirt Benedict did not want to leave.

The men's cross country team has been wishing for a small favor for the last two days.

Last year was truly a roller coaster ride for the Iowa Hawkeye basketball squad.

Last season, Carrie Scherer could only sit by the poolside, nurse the injured back that forced her to redshirt the year and watch teammate Tara Stevens lead the divers.

Redshirt-sophomore tailback Mike Archie and redshirt-junior linebacker Brian Gelzheiser were named the Big Ten offensive and defensive football players of the week, the Big Ten announced yesterday.

His only pleasant memory of Val Barnes is that one missed shot. The rest of the memories make Coach Bruce Parkhill cringe. Everything else that the former Iowa guard lofted toward the Rec Hall backboard went swishing through the nets.

Ki-Jana Carter said he shall return -- soon.

A calf injury forced the Penn State tailback to exit Saturday's game against Illinois early in the first quarter. But Carter said his decision not to play was simply precautionary. The injury, which Carter diagnosed as a calf-strain, is not serious.

ARTS

Jazz may seem like the forgotten music of State College, but there's a group of familiar fellas that are working to keep this brand of music alive and well locally. They're the Jazz Connection.

Jazz is known as a truly creative art form appreciated by the few. Many even refer to it as "an American treasure." Here in State College, some jazz musicians say that although this art form has grown a greater following in recent years, it's not appreciated enough.

African dance is life.

It is polyrhythmic, yet has one rhythm. It symbolizes unity. It is the celebration of African life and culture.
