It may have sold 30 million copies worldwide, but before the release of Tomb Raider: Legend last year it looked like Lara Croft was ending her video game career in disgrace. Thankfully the new game was exactly the reboot that the series needed, instantly reminding everyone why they loved it (and Lara) so much in the first place. So to mark the tenth anniversary of the first game (actually 2007 is the eleventh anniversary, but who’s counting?) Eidos are releasing this special remake of the first game in the series, using an enhanced version of the graphics engine from Tomb Raider: Legend.

Although the game does feature the same basic settings and levels as the original, this isn’t just the same game with better graphics. Most of the levels are larger, with many new paths and areas to explore. They’re also much more interactive, with Lara using many of the same moves and gadgets she demonstrated in Tomb Raider: Legend, including a grappling hook and a greater variety of weapons. The story has been expanded too, but it does keep the same basic structure with more animal enemies than the later games, including the infamous encounter with a tyrannosaurs rex. Instead of just running straight at you mindlessly, the enemies have also been given much better artificial intelligence than previously.

The new graphics are still the most obvious change but the new fluid movement of Lara is a world away from the awkward grid based system used in the old games. Indeed this should be the first video game remake to actually prove itself as something more than just a cheap cash-in.

Manufacturer's Description:
In 1996, the original Tomb Raider was launched. The 3D game design, controls and graphics were truly ground breaking for their time. Furthermore, gamers were also presented with a unique, female human playable character with whom they could become emotionally attached, Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider sold over seven million copies and is still heralded as an absolute classic and one of the best action adventure games ever. Tomb Raider defined the PlayStation and changed the way that people played games.

In tribute to this and to celebrate and commemorate the continuing development of the Tomb Raider franchise and its central character, Crystal Dynamics are developing a new Tomb Raider adventure for Lara. Inspired by the original Tomb Raider video game; Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary faithfully preserves the elements which made the original Tomb Raider game such a classic.

Using an enhanced ‘Tomb Raider: Legend’ game engine, the graphics, technology and physics bring Lara’s adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion right up to today’s technology standards and will offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience.

STORY OVERVIEW:
Tomb Raider follows the adventures of Lara Croft after she is hired by a powerful syndicate to retrieve a mythical object called the Scion. After discovering that she has been used as a pawn in some larger scheme, Lara takes matters into her own hands deciding that she must uncover the mystery behind this ancient artefact.

Tomb Raider Is BACK!!!, 1 Jun 2007
By Dave (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Fun:
We can all admit it, but Tomb Raider has had some hiccups the past few years. However not this one, this is the first one for a few years now that I have sat from 9am - 4pm playing tomb raider (it's no joke, I HAD to stop for dinner...), from the beginning it's addictive. The challenges are now challenging, unlike Legend where the answer was staring you straight in the face and are also fun to do and are satisfying to complete. It is also a must for PS3 owners, I've been playing it on a 32" HD screen on my PS3 (with latest up date) and it still looks amazing. If you can I would recommend you buy the collectors edition, the box is beautiful and comes with extra features, well worth the £5 extra.
Tomb Raider is back...and I can't wait for her next adventure...as this looks to be a success.

Simply amazing, 1 Jun 2007
Fun:
I got this game a few days ago, and I was not dissapointed. The game itself is not an exact remake, but a sort of re-telling of the story. The key moments from tomb raider 1 are all there though, making it a very nostalgic experience for those who have played the first, however, even if you havent, the story is told brillianly.
The graphics are amazing, and locations are full of organic and lush environments. The controls are easy to use, and Lara's new moves (Wall Run, Perch) are good fun also. The puzzles and exlporation requires thought, and may be hard for someone who has only played Legend. The Croft Manor has had an update, with a new garden, with a maze, an artifact room, and music room.
There is only the very occasional bug, and this rarely affects gameplay at all.
The animals are very well placed, and the bears can be very scary when they jump out at you. The new 'Adreniline dodge' makes the combat a whole lot more fun.
Lara herself is more feisty in this one compared to as she was in Tomb Raider Legend, and her fight scenes with Larson and Pierre are entertaining.
Overall this game is a faithful, but fresh remake of the original, with a very long play time and lots of replayability

Return Of The Scion, 31 May 2007

(REAL NAME)
Fun:
I played Tomb Raider with mum when I was about 10. The story really stuck in my head, it was fantastic but you had to watch the clips hard to grasp it, the new game puts the movies across far easier. I recommend playing Tomb Raider Legends first to get the back-story, don't worry if you can't buy it yet, this game is far better and doesn't need Legends as such, but it helps. I have been playing on it today and the levels do take a while, unlike Legends. Fantastic controls, even though now I am the one who can control her better than mum can. If you have played Tomb Raider I then buy this, you spot all the small things in it, like the first water leaver you ever pull does the same job in this new game! So many little things, like when you walk into your first cave, it shows the loading screen of the original games. Small things like that really make me smile!

A few things do scare me, the suspense supplied by the music and long caves make you sit on the very edge of your bed until you pull that damn leaver and all hell breaks loose. I am not one to be scarred easy, but this game just creeps over you.

The game is not just a re-make, but also a whole new approach to the world of Tomb Raider. You will spot old things but to be honest there are a lot of new puzzles and challenges!

Buy this; you will not be disappointed if you love a game with puzzles, shooting and dinosaurs!

Just got it, but wow, 31 May 2007
Fun:
I got this game this morning (30th May 2007) and what a game. It is the first one but so much better because of the up to date everything. I couldn't move her in the old one, can in this. The graphics are to die for, the controls so much better and the responsiveness spot on. I agree a bit about the swimming controls but I was never any good at that on games anyway. This is just supreme. Games makers, use this as the benchmark and we'll get no more dross to wade through on the shelves in the shops or the lists on the net. This is what a game should be. Can't wait for what's to come.

PROPER Tomb Raider, 30 May 2007
By Lydia (England) - See all my reviews
Fun:
Ignore the comments below that are based on the demos...I received Tomb Raider this morning (as I pre-ordered it months ago) and the first thing I must say is that it is nothing like the demo...it's MUCH better.

Opening up with an excellent beginning when Lara climbs up to the door to the Peru temple, the game is a magnificant improvement and celebration of not just the first Tomb Raider, but all of it's sequels.

The landscapes and surroundings are amazing: they literally have got me saying 'wow' over and over again.

Another great factor for this game is that each level takes a long time. I have played the very first TR about 100 times so I know it with my eyes shut, therefore I was expecting this "remake" to be the same but only look different. However, I was totally wrong. I'm only on the Temple of Tihocan level (about level 6) and Level 3 [The Lost Valley] took me nearly 2 hours to complete simply because the puzzles are so good and original.

Yet another great factor is the enemies you face. The amount of times I have jumped today!! They have brilliant AIs and what really freaked me out is they communicate with eachother.

Lara has improved drastically from TR: Legend - she moves more "stable" in this game and the faults have been removed (e.g. I found she fell off things quite a lot in Legend and her grip was not that good as I kept having to press triangle to stabilize her). The wall-running technique is brilliant and makes you feel like a true explorer - I get the same feeling I got when I first played the original TR when I was 10!!

The only reason why I have given this a 4 (I would give it a 4.5 if I could) is that I think the swimming controls could have been improved from Legend - there is a lot of swimming in Anniversary and the controls are a bit "fiddly".

Overall, this game is amazing. The wait is finally over and I'm so glad I finally have my copy of the last TR on PS2. I can definitely see myself playing Anniversary over and over again, whereas Legend was far too short and easy (even on Hard mode!!). This is 95% better than Legend as it does exactly what the name suggests: you are a Tomb Raider.

p.s. I would also recommend previous TR fans/players to start off on Medium Mode as it lasts longer for you :)

Enjoy. I hope I can complete level 6 soon - I can't wait for the Egypt levels!

Hey first one to review the proper game!, 30 May 2007
Fun:
Well it arrived in the post this monring and me and my 3 boys have played it non-stop ever since: I've got nothing done, we stopped briefly to eat and now they're battling it out in the first section of the game while I tear myself away to write this. I first played TR1 when I was pregnant with my first son and we're playing this one together ten years later!

It's quite weird to come back to a game that has become so familiar (we've replayed TR1 a few times over the years) but to play it in a new way. There's a feeling of recognition and newness at the same time. The controls are very natural feeling although I do miss the ability to spin around with the circle button when shooting. The graphics are, as you'd expect, amazing. The game recreates that eerie feeling of solitude that the first one did and which I don't think they ever managed to re-create until now. It feels more like the proper TR experience and so far I love it! Buy it if you loved the first one and you shouldn't be disappointed.
