Operational Policing

Managing and sharing information (IMPACT)

The IMPACT Programme is working with the police service to radically improve the way in which forces manage and share information.

Tackling 21st century crime requires 21st century solutions. Currently, information held in one force’s local system is invisible to officers in other areas. By giving forces the ability to find and access operational information held by their colleagues across England and Wales, the IMPACT Programme has the potential to transform policing in the UK - preventing and detecting crime, bringing offenders to justice, safeguarding children and other vulnerable people and professionalising the investigation process.

The key elements of the IMPACT Programme are:

  • Management of Police Information (MoPI): helps forces to meet common standards for police information management through a statutory Code of Practice and associated guidance.
  • IMPACT Nominal Index (IMPACT INI): is already enabling forces to quickly establish whether any other force holds information on a person of interest.
  • Police National Database (IMPACT PND): will provide a single access point for searching across all of the forces’ main operational information systems .
