Head Camera

Draft guidance about police use of body-worn video systems.

Plymouth BCU (Devon and Cornwall Constabulary) are conducting a pilot to test the use of head cameras at violent and other crime incidents.

As this pilot has attracted significant interest from forces across the country, the Police Standards Unit is publishing draft guidance for forces who may wish to consider their own implementation at this early stage.

Draft guidance available

The draft guidance document available on this page includes sections covering the legal application of body worn video devices, together with advice from the Crown Prosecution Service and the Information Commissioner.

Also included at this time are standard operating procedures, background information regarding the Plymouth pilot project and a technical specification that has been compiled by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) in consultation with officers and staff in Plymouth and other police areas.

There's also a link to an interim report providing an initial review of the technologies impact, the process and apparent benefits based on the pilot period to date.

Final guidance and assessment reports will follow after the conclusion of the Plymouth BCU project.
