Book Description
The Drenai fortress of Dros Delnoch has fallen and blood hungry Nadir hordes sweep across the land, bringing desolation and despair. But, with the Nadir triumphant, slavers seize a young girl in the tiny realm of Gothir and a peasant boy stes off on a quest that will shake the world.

To rescue her, Kiall must cross the savage steppes and journey through the Halls of Hell, facing ferocious beasts, deadly warriors and demons of the dark.

But the boy is not alone. With him are the legendary heroes of Bel-Azar: Chareos the Blademaster, Beltzer the Axeman and the bowmen Finn and Maggrig.

And one among them hides a secret that could free the world of Nadir domination. For he is the Nadir Bane, the hope of the Drennai.

He is the Earl of Bronze.

Depth of Character, 2 Oct 2006
Reviewer:H. Southgate (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I thought this boo kwas fantastic. I've read a fari bit of heroic fantasy and, in all those books, the heroes are shining men with no faults. Just as the fables tell. But QFLH shows the truth.

The story revolves aroudn heroes of a lost battle - stories of whom describe them as brave, valiant heroes - yet nothing could be further than the truth. One is fat and ugly and smells - one is a coward and was only present at the battle because he ran from somewhere else. This book scrapes away the romantic veneer that campfire songs give to heroes and portrays them as they could be: real people with real faults. The characters in this book are superb.

As is the story. As with all of Gemmell's books, this grips from the first few pages, right through to the end. It's a great book and my favourite Gemmell book so far.

The weakest gemmell book, 18 Mar 2006
Reviewer:genejoke "genejoke" (uk) - See all my reviews
I did quite enjoy this, but I couldn't remember much of it afterward. It just doesn't compare to most of gemmells work.
Gemmells strength lies in creating heroes of legend, here he fails to do so, they are more like also rans.
Its better than most authors can do but from gemmell it is a let down.

Quest for lost heroes, 8 Jan 2004
Reviewer: A reader
I thought it was a good read, it got into depth with the characters but lacked originality. And the heroes, Magrigg and Finn did not seem like very good heroes compared to the likes of Waylander, Druss, Tenaka and Regnac who gave you a REAL sense of what heroes are like. I prefer Legend. (and waylander)

The earl of Bronze, 13 Oct 2002
Reviewer: A reader
The Quest for Lost Heroes is the best Drenai Novel yet. The story line magnificent and the twists and turns makes it a thrilling read. The idea of the four heroes of Belazar going on a quest to save a Pig-breeders daughter and then it turning in to a quest that will change the entire world if they succeed is magnificent. There are no faults with this book. It is the most enthralling book I have ever read

Not Gemmell's Best!, 28 Mar 2002

Rather Formulaic.Frustrating too!Does anyone understand where this novel fits into the Drenai Timeline, as I have admit I'm lost! Not in the same class as "Hero in the Shadows", for example.Maybe I'm missing something.

Along with Legend - Gemmell's best work, 3 Mar 2001
Reviewer:"clivegibbs" - See all my reviews
After reading the wonderful LEGEND, I thought that Gemmell's best work was, like many fantasy authors, his first novel - after the less than inspiring KING BEYOND THE GATE. However, the characters in QUEST FOR LOST HEROES are awesome - even the cameos are better than the characters in any other fantasy I have ever read - even Gemmell's own Waylander is nothing compared to the loveable, un-stereotypical "heroes" on show here. The best stand alone fantasy book I have ever read.
