I researched this question last year when I wanted to make a more sophisticated version of strawberry shortcake for dinner guests. I found that adding liquor to it wouldn't get the same result because of the way the sugars work. What I did was add rum and triple sec to the mixture after the "magic" had taken place and then poured that mixture over the shortcake. It was a big hit - just in case you were looking for an extra recipe and had some liquor hanging around the house.
