Senator Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-four years. He was first elected in 1962 to complete the term of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. Since then, he has been re-elected to eight full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.
Throughout his career, Kennedy has fought for issues that benefit the citizens of Massachusetts and the nation, always putting the interests of Americans before special interest groups.
His effort dedicated to making quality health care accessible and affordable for every American began when he first arrived in the Senate. In addition, he is active on a wide range of other issues. He was an early and active opponent of the war in Iraq, and he has fought to get our troops the protective equipment they need. He has led numerous successful fights in the Senate over the years to raise the minimum wage.
Kennedy continues to work to reform education and immigration, defend the rights of workers and their families, strengthen civil rights, assist individuals with disabilities, fight for cleaner water and cleaner air, and protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare.
Currently, he is Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. In addition, he serves on the Judiciary Committee, where he is Chairman of the Immigration, Border Security and Refugee Subcommittee, the Senate Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman of the Seapower Subcommittee, and the Joint Economic Committee.
Kennedy is also a long-standing member of the Congressional Friends of Ireland, and a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Senator Kennedy is the youngest of nine children of Joseph P. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Virginia Law School. He lives in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, with his wife Victoria Reggie Kennedy. Together, they have five children - Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick Kennedy, and Curran and Caroline Raclin, and four grandchildren.
