Hillary's Statement on the UAW Strike

by Crystal Patterson

Hillary issued the following statement in support of the striking members of the United Auto Workers.

"I stand in solidarity with the men and women of the UAW who have been forced to strike in defense of their jobs.  The negotiations that led to this strike involve the fundamental issues of health security for workers and retirees, fair wages, retirement protection and job security.

"As President, I will continue my efforts to rebuild our manufacturing industry, to provide good jobs with health and retirement security, and to honor the hard work of unions like the UAW.

"We have a shared interest in a healthy and successful US auto industry, and I hope the current dispute can be resolved quickly for the benefit of the workers and General Motors."

Hillary on The Anniversary of the Little Rock Nine

by Crystal Patterson
in News
9/25/2007 8:52 AM

Hillary:

"What we saw here in Little Rock in the Fall of 1957 shocked us and changed us. Mothers and fathers across America saw in those nine children the vulnerability and promise of their own children. They saw in that hateful mob the ugliness of their own prejudices and fears. And they were forced to ask themselves: "Is that who I am? Is that who we are?" The brave men and women on this stage paid a high price for the answers to those questions. And we are all so grateful for their courage and their sacrifice.

"Today, fifty years later, America is still struggling to finish their work. We have seen schools re-segregating and a Supreme Court chipping away at Brown v. Board of Education. We have seen in Jena, Louisiana and elsewhere that the scales of justice are seriously out of balance - and discrimination is a daily fact of life.

"The Little Rock Nine did - and continue to do - their part, and now it is our turn. We must ensure that one day, the nine students we honor tonight can tell their children and grandchildren about how we finally overcame. How we finally came together and did what was right for America. How, while it took far too long - and cost so many people so much - we finally finished what the Little Rock Nine started all those years ago."

Indiana Senator Evan Bayh Endorses Hillary

Hillary's campaign today announced the endorsement of Indiana Senator Evan Bayh and named him a national Campaign Co-Chair.

"Hillary Clinton is a seasoned, experienced leader who will be ready to lead this country on Day One," Bayh said. "She will run the kind of campaign and administration that will appeal to all corners of America, emphasizing national security and middle class economic progress."

First elected to the Senate in 1998, Sen. Bayh has earned a reputation as a bipartisan problem solver, committed to strengthening our national security, growing small businesses to create new jobs and encouraging responsible fatherhood.

"I have seen firsthand how effective she is interacting with global leaders and the respect she commands," Bayh said. "I believe that her approach to our national security challenges will be strong but also more effective, because it will be more thoughtful and comprehensive than the current administration's. Senator Clinton is both tough and smart."

Prior to being elected to the Senate, Sen. Bayh served two terms as Governor of Indiana, where he established a track record of fiscal responsibility and economic growth, passing the largest tax cut in state history and creating 350,000 new jobs. Prior to being elected Governor, Sen. Bayh served as Indiana's Secretary of State.

Sen. Bayh currently serves on five committees: Banking Housing and Urban Affairs, on which he is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance; Armed Services; the Select Committee on Intelligence; the Special Committee on Aging; and the Small Business Committee.

"In an increasingly rancorous political environment, Evan has consistently reached across the aisle to tackle our nation's toughest challenges and get results," Hillary said. "I'm honored to have his support as we bring our message of change across the country."

Hillary went on all five Sunday shows this morning and showed why her strength and experience make her uniquely able to make change happen for the country starting on her first day in office.

At a time when others are trying to rejuvenate their campaigns by shifting tactics, Hillary showed why she commands the stage and that her campaign is setting the terms of the debate in the Democratic primary.

Hillary took questions from some of the toughest interviewers in the news media and demonstrated her firm grasp of the challenges facing the country while underscoring her commitment to ending the war and making universal health care a reality.

On Health Care: "The American health choices plan does not create any new bureaucracy. It is not government-run health care. If you are satisfied with your health care, you keep it, no questions asked. But if you are one of those 47 million uninsured, or if you are one of the many millions more who actually have insurance except when you really need it and the insurance company won't pay for what your doctor has prescribed, you will now have the same choices that are available to members of Congress, because we will open up the plan that members of Congress have and give you a health choices menu to choose from." [Fox News Sunday]

On Electability: "Well, Tim, those are the things that were said about me in New York, as I'm sure you remember, and I worked very hard to give people accurate information about who I am, what I stand for, what I will do, and I was extremely gratified to win in 2000 and even more so to be re-elected with nearly 67% of the vote. And I was very pleased that a lot of that vote came from Republicans and independents. You know, I carried a lot of those counties that George Bush had carried just two years before. Carried 58 of New York's 62 counties. And as you know, there are a lot of red parts of New York.As I've traveled around the country, my support has grown. Anyone who gets the Democratic nomination is going to be subjected to the withering attacks that come from the other side. I think I've proven that I not only can survive them, but surpass them." [Meet the Press]

On the War: "I believe we should vote against funding the war. In the absence of any clear signal or any straight up-and-down policy that puts pressure on the Iraqi government to make the political decisions that it makes, that gives the Bush administration the sense of urgency to engage in the diplomatic effort, we are putting this all on the backs of our military. There is no military solution. So no matter how heroically and dedicated the performance of our young men and women and their officers are in Iraq, which it has been, they cannot referee successfully a sectarian civil war. I voted against funding last spring. I will vote against funding again in the absence of any change in policy." [Face the Nation]
