Massachusetts: 2008 Presidential Election
No Home Field Advantage for Romney in Massachusetts
Advertisment

If former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney wins the Republican Presidential nomination, he isn’t likely to deliver his home state’s Electoral Votes to the GOP.

A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds Romney trailing Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by 26 percentage points, 60% to 34%. He also trails John Edwards by 21-points (54% to 33%) and Barack Obama by 18-points (54% to 36%).

Rudy Giuliani doesn’t fare any worse than Romney in the Bay State. The former Mayor of New York City trails Clinton 58% to 33%. The newest entrant into the Presidential race, former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, trails Clinton by and even larger margin—61% to 27%.

Clinton, Obama, and Edwards are the top three candidates in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney are tops in national polling for the GOP race.

Sixty-five percent (65%) of Massachusetts voters have a favorable opinion of Clinton while 62% offer an upbeat assessment of both Obama and Edwards. The Republican candidates don’t fare as well. In the Bay State, 47% have a favorable opinion of Giuliani, 43% say the same about Romney, and 36% have a positive assessment of Thompson.

The poll also found that 51% of the state’s voters believe Senator John Kerry deserves to be re-elected. Thirty-four percent (34%) say he does not while 14% are not sure. Kerry has served in the Senate since 1984.

Just 24% of Massachusetts voters say that President Bush is doing a good or an excellent job. Fifty-nine percent (59%) say poor.

Forty-two percent (42%) say that Governor Deval Patrick is doing a good or an excellent job. Just 19% say poor.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of the state’s voters believe casino gambling should be legalized in Massachusetts. Thirty-one percent (31%) disagree.
