Virginia: 2008 Presidential Election
Clinton Has Slight Edge Over GOP Hopefuls
Advertisment

No Democratic Presidential candidate has won the state of Virginia since 1964, but some analysts believe the state’s Electoral College Votes could be in play during Election 2008. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows that those expectations might not be out of line.

In fact, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton currently has a 2-4 percentage point advantage over three leading Republican Presidential hopefuls. Not only is Clinton competitive in the Presidential race, Democrat Mark Warner has a substantial lead in the race for the U.S. Senate seat from Virginia.

In a Presidential match-up with the GOP frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani, Clinton has a 44% to 41% edge. When matched against the newest entrant in the race, Clinton earns 46% of the vote while Fred Thompson attracts 44%. Clinton leads former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney by four points, 44% to 40%.

There is virtually no gender gap in a Clinton-Giuliani match-up, but a huge gap in a Clinton-Thomson contest. Clinton leads Thompson by 11 among women while Thompson leads by eight among men. In all three match-ups, the Republican candidate leads among senior citizens while Clinton has a strong edge among those under 30.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows Clinton with a solid lead in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Giuliani has a much more modest lead in national GOP polling.

Clinton is viewed favorably by 49% and unfavorably by 48% of Virginia voters. Those figures are similar to her numbers nationally. Clinton is viewed favorably by 54% of women and 43% of men.

Thompson is viewed favorably by 54% of Virginia voters, Giuliani by 53%, and Romney by 45%.

Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Virginia voters say that President Bush is doing a good or excellent job. Forty-five percent (45%) say he is doing a poor job.

Governor Tim Kaine (D) earns much better reviews—55% good or excellent, 9% poor.

The survey was conducted in partnership with Fox Television Stations, Inc.

Surveys were released today for the Presidential race in Virginia, Minnesota, and Massachusetts along with Senate race polls for Virginia and Minnesota.

Rasmussen Reports has also released Election 2008 state polling results in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, New York and Illinois.

In Primary Polls, Clinton leads all Democrats in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida.

The Republican Primary picture is more muddled. Romney leads in New Hampshire, Thompson leads in South Carolina, and Giuliani is on top in Florida.
