Oxford photographs
Here is a small collection of
photographs of
Oxford by
Jonathan Bowen
in Victorian style vignettes and sepia tones:
-
All Souls College
-
A gargoyle
-
The High Street
-
The Radcliffe Camera
All Souls
is the only
Oxford college not to have any students,
but instead consists entirely of fellows.
Gargoyles are a feature of
Oxford architecture and can help with water
drainage from roofs using the mouth as a spout. Many are reputed to
resemble Oxford dons of their day.
The High Street from Carfax Tower
The
High Street is the main easterly street out of Oxford.
University College
on the right is by tradition the oldest Oxford college founded in 1249,
but the site of the college moved during its history and the current
buildings date from the 17th century. Carfax, from where this
photograph is taken, is considered the centre of Oxford being at the
crossroads of four important thoroughfares.
The Radcliffe Camera is part of the
Bodleian Library at
Oxford University and is used as a reading room.
