EU Parliament shortlists 3 films for first Lux Prize

BRUSSELS -- Cannes Palme d'Or winner "4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days," Fatih Akin's "The Edge of Heaven" and Manoel de Oliveira's "Belle Toujours" were shortlisted Monday by the European Parliament for its inaugural annual film award, the Lux Prize.
The Lux Prize -- a special trophy shaped like the Tower of Babel -- will be awarded by European Parliament President Hans Gert Poettering on Oct. 24 at the Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, France.
The prize was set up as part of this year's 50th anniversary celebrations of the Treaty of Rome, the European Union's founding treaty. The aim is to single out a film to illustrate European values and the diversity of cultures. There is no money in the prize, but the Parliament will pay for the winning film to be subtitled in all of the EU's 23 official languages.
The jury is the 785-member European Parliament, though only those members who have seen all three films will be eligible to vote.
